ASHLAND One could call them the “Teen Machines,” but Ava Kazee is still two years from fitting that bill.

The kids were kicking in the Summer Motion 10K/5K on Saturday. All four male/female top finishers are younger than 20.

Kazee, 11, is still more than a month away from hitting the middle school hallways, but she navigated the 10K course like a veteran.

Victor Aguilera, 19, is primarily a soccer player who couldn’t set a realistic goal to win Saturday’s race. But he did so anyway.

Jacob Nakamura, 16, and Elizabeth Middleton, 15, were true to form. Middleton excels as a West Carter athlete. It was somewhat of a test drive for Nakamura, though, as he continues to recover from a hip injury.

Back in the area for his annual visit with grandparents Mitsuto and Joleine Nakamura, Jacob Nakamura captured his second Summer Motion 5K title in as many years. The Lakeland, Florida, resident experienced a physical issue at the conclusion of cross country season.

“It’s my right hip,” he said. “I didn’t run at all for three months or so, but I did the elliptical. In January, I started running 10, 15 miles a week. Then it ended up switching to the left side. It’s sort of going back and forth a little bit, sort of weird.”

It didn’t hinder him much as he blazed through 3.1 miles in 17:39, 31 seconds faster than last year’s result — granted, he missed a turn in 2018.

“I had no idea what exactly it was going to be like,” said the Bartow High School junior-to-be. “It had been so long since I pushed myself like that. I definitely did better than I expected.”

Aguilera participated in his first 10K. The Rock Hill graduate is signed with Shawnee State to play soccer. Born in Honduras, Aguilera is used to traveling. His family has lived in Italy, too. After his stepfather, Michael Riggle, retired from the military when Aguilera was 11, the clan moved to Ironton.

“I’ve only run in 5Ks, but I thought, I might as well step it up,” said Aguilera, who plans to study exercise science at Shawnee.

Aguilera initially had an inauspicious position, in his opinion.

“At the beginning, I was kinda negative,” he said of his mindset. “But I thought, it’s a 10K; it’s a long journey. I knew I was going to pick it up later on.”

Aguilera cemented his confidence on the Simeon Willis Bridge, where he pulled away from Rock Hill students Sam Simpson and Logan Boggs, among others, for a winning time of 38:07. Simpson and Boggs finished second and third, respectively.

Boyd County’s JB Terrill and Eric Sparks, a Boyd County alumnus, were the fourth and fifth teenagers to cross the finish line. They were sixth and seventh, overall. Sparks, last year’s winner, encountered trouble at the 6-mile mark but eventually recovered.

Neil Johnson broke the trend of young guns as the 44-year-old placed fifth. However, he was probably more concerned about an up-and-coming runner he’s been training and mentoring.

Kazee has engaged in several runs with the 5K Crew, of which Johnson is part. After completing his race, he tracked down Kazee, running alongside her down the homestretch in front of the Boyd County Public Library.

“Every time I’m at a race, he comes back for me, and he’s like, ‘Go Ava!’” Kazee said.

Kazee admitted a victory didn’t cross her mind until she actually achieved it. Her time of 49:17 is a personal record.

Kazee began lacing up the running shoes at age 6. When she was in first grade, Cannonsburg Elementary conducted a 5K.

“I went with my mom and was like, is this a race?” Kazee recalled. “It just went through my mind and I just went for it after that.”

Of 214 total runners who finished, 126 tackled the 10K. Eighty-eight people completed the 5K. Six of them are 10 or younger.
