Thursday marks the start of the state tennis tournament in Lexington.
Thirty-nine northeastern Kentucky athletes will hit the courts to participate in the Round of 64.
The field will be trimmed to 16 by Friday. The semifinals are slated for Saturday.
Ashland’s Parker Clarke and Morgan County’s Ashton Whitt will both compete as No. 5 seeds in boys singles play.
Russell’s Michael Eastham and Greenup County’s Madison Hill will enter as 9-seeds in boys and girls play, respectively. Hill is a three-time 16th Region singles champion.
In girls singles, Emma Hill (Ashland), Jessalyn Osborn (Lawrence County), Ashley Nguyen (Russell), Maria Hayes (East Carter), Allie Wells (Johnson Central) and Katelyn Pauley (Lawrence County) will represent the area.
Northeastern Kentucky girls doubles teams are the following: Emma Johnson and Abby Meek (Ashland); Eden and Adrian Webb (Lawrence County); Delaynee and Belamee Sparks (Rose Hill); Sheree Hay and Maci Pollock (Lawrence County); Emily Hammonds and Kennedy Trusty (Morgan County); and Hollie Hedrick and Elizabeth Davis (Ashland).
Local boys doubles duos include Lawrence County’s Hunter Goble and Herbie Parks, Johnson Central’s Scott Daniel and Hilal Sofoyan, Ashland’s Reed Daniel and Ethan Sellars, Rowan County’s Luke Burrows and Jordan Justice, Morgan County’s McKenzie Daniel and Jacob Elam, Ashland’s Justin Lucas and Mac Meek and Lawrence County’s Brock Kessinger and S.J. Lycans.
Daniel/Sellars will face Burrows/Justice.
The same goes for Lucas/Meek and Kessinger/Lycans.
Lawrence County’s Noah Fairchild and Lincoln Rose will both represent the Bulldogs in boys singles action. Ashland’s Alden Johnson will lace ’em up for the Tomcats.
