LLOYD Raceland softball coach Shawn Johnson, who is retiring after this season, was asked after the Lady Rams’ 7-6 win over Russell on April 22 if he had given any thought to the idea that might have been his last Raceland-Russell game in a career full of them.
“It won’t be,” Johnson answered.
Johnson was right. His last one will be for elimination stakes.
The Lady Rams and Lady Devils, who have met in the 63rd District Tournament final the last four years, will this time collide in the win-or-go-home district semifinals on May 20 at Greenup County after Russell lost a coin toss with the Lady Musketeers for the tournament’s No. 3 seed on Thursday.
Russell’s baseball team also lost a coin toss Thursday with Greenup County for that tournament’s No. 3 seed. The Red Devils will meet Lewis County, with whom they split two seeding games, in the district tournament semifinals, and host Greenup County will play second-seeded Raceland.
Top-seeded Raceland and Russell meet to begin the softball tournament on Monday, May 20 at 5:30 p.m. Second-seeded Lewis County and Greenup County play after that. The final is the next evening at 6.
Lewis County and Russell kick off the baseball event on May 20 at 5:30 p.m. Greenup County-Raceland will follow. The title game is May 21 at 6 p.m.
