GRAYSON LAKE Raceland’s girls and West Carter’s boys each captured their third consecutive team titles at Tuesday’s 16th Region All “A” Tournament on a soggy Hidden Cove Golf Course at Grayson Lake State Park.
The Comet boys shot 175 over nine holes to out-distance Elliott County (200) and Fairview (245) on the par-36, 3,183-yard course, while the Lady Rams carded a 300 playing on a 2,453-yard course, which also had a par of 36. West Carter also participated in the girls’ tournament, but only had three entries and did not count in the team scoring.
“It was a pretty rough day as far as conditions of the course. It was very wet and pretty sloppy,” said Terrell Webb, who coaches West Carter’s boys and girls. “But, Trevor Callahan, he came in with his best nine-hole score in a match and shot a 40. That was really big for us.
“Nick James turned in another solid performance with a 40 as well,” he continued. “Another highlight of our round today, I have one senior — Cole Bond — and he had his first par. He’s only been playing for about three weeks and he parred his last hole today.”
Raceland retained its girls’ title despite having graduated four of the five members of last year’s team.
“We struggled a little bit today. My No. 1 really had an off day, but my No. 2 played real well. Shalyn West, this was her first time playing in a tournament,” coach Kim Sexton said. “In fact … for three of these girls, this was their first tournament ever. So, we were very proud of them for finishing it out, not having to (mark a) circle on any holes and just making it through as much as anything.”
On the boys’ side, James, a senior, and Callahan, a junior, each recorded a 40 to tie for medalist honors. Both parred five holes and bogeyed the remaining four.
The two had opposite views of their day on the course.
“It was a pretty mediocre day, if I’m being honest,” James said. “I had some shots that were good and some shots that I’d like back, but that’s just golf.
“I was pretty good on my fairways today and I also got my greens in regulation,” he added.
It was a different story for Callahan.
“I putted really good today. Around the green chipping and putting, I didn’t lose many strokes,” he countered. “And I hit almost every fairway, so I was just keeping it in play.”
Elliott County’s Gatlin Griffith finished with a 44 to place third and will join sixth-place finisher and teammate Aaron Adams as the region’s two at-large representatives to the state All “A” championships next month.
West Carter’s Tyson Webb shot a 46 to place fourth, followed by Braydon DeHart (West Carter) at 49, Adams at 50, Elliott County’s Eli Griffith with a 51, Fairview’s Tucker Adams at 54, Elliott County’s Cameron Adams at 55, and West Carter’s Cole Bond, Bath County’s Connor Crouch and Raceland’s Caleb West, who each shot a 59 to tie for 10th.
Bre Boggs defended her 2018 individual title after shooting a 49 on Tuesday. The West Carter junior won by 14 strokes over Raceland’s Laney Sexton and West.
Like James, Boggs was a bit disappointed with her performance. She registered a four on the 352-yard No. 8 hole, but it was her only par of the round.
“Today wasn’t my best day. That was probably one of the worst scores I’ve shot in a while,” she admitted. “(But) I did a little bit better on my putting, I made some really long putts.”
West Carter’s Kenzie Kilgore carded a 71 to place fourth and earn the second at-large bid to the state tournament. Teammate Addyson Lyles shot a 78 to take fifth. Raceland’s Macie Riffe finished with an 80, followed by Jamie Talbott at 94.
Both the boys’ and girls’ All “A” state tournament will be held in Richmond on Sept. 7. The boys are playing at the Gibson Bay Golf Course and the girls on the Arlington Golf Course.
