PAINTSVILLE Savannah Wheeler opened her senior season with a night for the record books.

Wheeler poured in 44 points, a Boyd County single-game high dating to at least 1975, as the visiting Lady Lions topped Johnson Central, 82-71, on Monday night.

Harley Paynter and Emma Borders each chipped in 13 points for Boyd County, which won an opening-night meeting of the defending champions of the 16th and 15th Regions.

Ashlee Belcher led four Lady Eagles in double figures with 21 points. Sammi Sites notched 16, Kelci Blair added 14 and Alaina Castle tallied 13.

Wheeler’s scoring effort surpassed the previous school high since 1975 belonging to Star Evans, who scored 39 points against Greenup County on Dec. 20, 1996.

Wheeler, already Boyd County’s career record-holding point-scorer, also reached 30 points for the 12th time. She’d been tied with Paula Hatton (1975-77) for the most times a Lady Lion had done that since 1975.

Raceland 64, Green 38

FRANKLIN FURNACE, Ohio Nine Lady Rams dressed, nine played, and seven scored.

Raceland doesn’t have transfers Brooke Zaph and Holly Bryant eligible until next week and Kierston Smith sustained a high-ankle sprain in a preseason scrimmage. It didn’t matter Monday night as the visiting Lady Rams got career-high point production from Emilee Garvin (22 points) and Chloe Collins (18).

Raceland thus won its opener for the second straight season, which it hadn’t done since 2008-09 and 2009-10. The Lady Rams won in the Buckeye State for the first time since Dec. 9, 2013, ending a four-game skid north of the river.

Collins also had 10 rebounds for a double-double. Garvin made nine of 10 shots from the field.

Kasey Kimbler led the Lady Bobcats with 19 points. Seven Green players scored.
