MOREHEAD Mason County couldn’t catch Chase Alderman.

Rowan County’s sophomore lifted the Vikings into overtime with a game-tying layup in the final minute of regulation in the first round of the Kentucky 2A Section 5 Tournament on Monday night.

And once in the extra session, Alderman won it with a free throw with 3 seconds left to give Rowan County a 55-54 victory over the Royals.

Mason County had a heavily contested look at a 3 at the buzzer, but it didn’t draw iron.

Mason Moore scored 24 points and Alderman netted 14 for the Vikings (11-5), who meet Pendleton County in the section tournament semifinals at Bourbon County on Thursday night.

Xylon Frey scored 14 points and Alex Schalch tallied 13 for Mason County (6-6), which outscored Rowan County 15-6 in the fourth quarter to get to overtime.

The Vikings and Royals meet again on Feb. 20 in Morehead in the regular-season finale.

SUMMIT Already up 12 points, the host Lions slapped the defensive cuffs on the Panthers by outscoring them 40-13 in the second half on Monday night.

Blake Stewart led four Boyd County (8-6) players in double figures with 16 points. Carson Webb pitched in 14 points, and Brad Newsome and JB Walter each totaled 13.

Nine Lions scored.

Larkin McKee netted 20 points for Fleming County (5-8).

MOREHEAD The Lady Vikings grabbed an 18-7 lead after one quarter to cruise in the Kentucky 2A Section 5 Tournament first round on Monday.

Haven Ford scored 22 points and Hailey Rose pitched in 20 for Rowan County (7-7), which meets Pendleton County in the section semifinals on Thursday.

Nariyah Harrison collected 10 points to pace the Lady Royals (5-8).

Russell outscored Raceland 29-8 in the first quarter to take control early and 20-4 in the third frame to run away with it.

Shaelyn Steele scored 17 points, Mila Blevins and Aubrey Hill each tallied 11, and Kaeli Ross pitched in 10 for the Lady Devils (7-5, 2-0 district seeding).

Emilee Garvin notched 16 points for the Lady Rams (4-8, 1-3 seeding).

Carey finished with 25 points, a career high, and Whitt tallied 16 for the Lady Pointers (5-6, 4-3 Ohio Valley Conference). Carey connected on five 3-pointers.

Blake Anderson led the Lady Panthers (5-6, 3-4 OVC) with 14 points.
