HUNTINGTON Kristen Mayo led all scorers as Marshall’s women beat Kentucky Christian, 89-40, on the basketball court on Tuesday at the Cam Henderson Center.

The former East Carter star dropped in 19 points for the Thundering Herd in its season opener.

Savannah Wheeler, a Boyd County graduate and the reigning Miss Basketball in Kentucky, was a point shy of matching Mayo, a junior. The freshman tallied 18 points on 6-of-9 shooting. She was 2 of 3 from the 3-point range and went 4 of 4 from the foul line.

Marshall junior Taylor Pearson scored 12 points and had five assists. Redshirt senior Khadaijia Brooks finished with 11 points.

Marshall racked up 24 steals and forced 33 turnovers on defense. Mayo and junior Dazha Congleton had five thefts apiece. Wheeler had four takeaways.

Wheeler scored 11 points in the third quarter, going a perfect 4 of 4 from the floor. Mayo had four of her five steals in the third.

Marshall will host Norfolk State on Saturday at 1 p.m.
