Ashland native Brad Fields continues to be hailed for his communications work at the University of South Carolina Aiken.

Fields, a 1994 graduate of Ashland Blazer, has been sports information director at the Division II school for the past seven years.

Last week, USCA was recognized by the College of Sports Information Directors of America for excellence in publications.

The USCA sports information office received four national awards during the 2005-06 publications awards ceremony at the annual CoSIDA Convention in Nashville.

The haul established a school record and ranked fourth in Division II this year.

“It is humbling to think about our efforts in the sports information office drawing this much attention, but no make mistake about it, we are proud of our work and will continue on our constant pursuit of excellence,’’ said Fields, assistant athletic director for communications. “Our media guides are a great tool used by a variety of audiences and we take great pride in creating the highest quality product possible.’’

Highlighting the honors was the golf media guide receiving “Best in the Nation’’ distinction, a first for USCA. Written and designed by Fields, the publication was also awarded the Best Cover.

The 2006 baseball media guide took third place and the women’s basketball guide fifth.

Under Fields’ leadership, USC Aiken’s sports information has won 11 awards — nine national — over the past five years..

``It’s a testament to the hard work of our staff and says a lot about where our department is headed,’’ he said.

Fields praised the efforts of first-year assistant SID Lindsey McNeil and student assistants Brandy Johnson and Matt Bramlett.

Prior to Fields’ arrival, the only publication award for the USCA sports information office came in 1998-99. USC Aiken was the only Peach Belt Conference school to win an award for 2005-06.

For his efforts, Fields was named the conference’s Sports Information Director for the second time in the three-year history of the award.

His parents — William and Pebble Fields — continue to reside in Ashland.
