RUSSELL The Boyd County Lady Lions took care of business Wednesday evening as they beat the Russell Lady Devils 9-6, scoring in all but one inning.

The Lady Lions recorded 15 hits and committed just one error for the game, which marks Boyd County’s third win in a row.

“That’s one of the things we talked about,” Boyd County coach Dave Wheeler said. “Play a clean game, make pitches, move runners — that’s what we need to do.”

In the first inning, Boyd County hung three runs on the board off of just four pitches. That inning was anchored by a double from Haylee Thornsberry.

The Lady Lions kept it going in the second, scoring two off a multitude of errors from the Lady Devils.

Down 5-0 in the bottom of the third, Russell fought back, scoring four runs off four hits to pull within one.

“From the start of the season to the end, this team doesn’t give up,” Russell coach Nikki Beek said.

Boyd County made a pitching change, with Sara Bays relieving Kylie Thompson, in the fourth.

“I can’t say enough good things about our pitching. It was a good one-two punch from Sara and Kylie,” Wheeler said.

Boyd County scored one run in each of the fourth, fifth and sixth innings, while Russell put up a couple of runs during that span.

That put the score at 8-6 heading into the seventh inning.

The Lady Lions were able to send Tori Badgett home. Badgett had four hits on the day, including an RBI, and got on base in all five of her at-bats.

Down 9-6, the Lady Devils had one last attempt at a rally, but it couldn’t find any footing.

“We’re happy to get a win,” Wheeler said. “We came in here to prepare for a tournament atmosphere and we did that.”

The Lady Devils move forward to the 63rd District Tournament where they will face Raceland in the first round.

Boyd County has a couple of home games coming up, hosting Rowan County and East Carter, before facing Fairview in the 64th District Tournament on Monday.
