ASHLAND The second annual Braidy Industries $60,000 Women’s Tennis Classic is officially under way.
Sunday’s opening ceremony below sunny skies and amid high-80s temperatures signaled the start of the eight-day event, which was named USTA Kentucky’s Tournament of the Year in 2018.
The Boyd County Junior ROTC let the country’s colors fly at one end of Ashland Tennis Center’s first court as Russell Middle School’s Madeline Smith sang the National Anthem.
A slew of volunteers surrounded half of the court as they anticipated tackling a week full of duties.
Tournament chairman Dr. Jack Ditty and his son in-law and daughter, Josh Qualls (tournament director) and Julie Ditty Qualls (pro consultant), stayed on the move to help properly get the tournament off and running. Jack Ditty grabbed the microphone to voice a few words of gratitude and gave an introductory speech.
Several fans gathered to watch Vladica Babic, of Montenegro, and Julia Rosenquist, of Sweden, engage in an exhibition match at around 1:20. Both will play in today’s qualifier — action begins at 9 a.m.
The main draw tournament is scheduled to begin on Tuesday.
Doubles semifinals are slated for Friday at 2 p.m. The doubles championship is scheduled for Saturday at 2 p.m.
Singles semifinals are set for Saturday at 10 a.m. The finals will take place on Sunday at 1:15 p.m., if all goes as planned. Gail Brodsky (Brooklyn, New York) was last year’s champion.
Brodsky and 2018 runner-up Maegan Manasse (Redondo Beach, California) return for this summer’s event. Among other players who tote impressive resumes into ATC this week are Madison Brengle (Dover, Delaware), Robin Anderson (Matawan, New Jersey), Jamie Loeb (Ossining, New York), Maria Sanchez (Los Angeles), Ann Li (Devon, Pennsylvania) and Emina Bektas (Indianapolis).
Ticket cost is $8 daily or $30 for a tournament pass. Visit ashlandprotennis.com for more information.
