ASHLAND Short memories can be aided by the long ball.

Ashland came out firing to start its matinee matchup on Saturday afternoon with Greenup County in an attempt to put some distance between itself and Friday night’s setback to rival Russell.

Julia Parker drained her first four field goals, including three triples, to set the tone early. The Kittens followed by using their size down low to win, 72-33, at Anderson Gym.

“We came out and they were still angry from last night,” Ashland coach Bill Bradley said. “We just happened to get hot, especially Julia in the first quarter. I like knowing the girls know when Julia is hot and all four of the girls on the floor start looking for her to shoot. We need those points.”

Parker had a game-high 20 points. Morgan Bradley and Mikayla Martin each supplied double-doubles. Bradley tallied 14 points and 12 rebounds. Martin followed suit with 15 points and 10 boards.

Her coach said Parker was locked in from the tip.

“She was ready to go today,” Bradley said. “Out of the gate, she was ready to play. Her shooting is the biggest part of it. In the first play we ran, she was set, we found her and she knocked that 3 down. You could see it in her eyes. Morgan and Mikayla, they are all looking for her. We got our inside-out game going and Carley (Cullop) did a great job running the show. I was very proud of them.”

Parker’s 3 party started a 15-4 spurt to end the first quarter. The margin grew to 29 in the second stanza as the Kittens scored 17 of the first 19 points. Ashland’s size advantage started to take its toll, leading to several second-chance opportunities.

“I thought our interior passing was really good tonight,” Bill Bradley said, “with Morgan, Mikayla and Syd (Sorrell). They all could have taken the little 4 or 5-footer, but they saw the dump-down pass. They all made some great assists tonight.”

Sophomore Taylor Gammon sent the Lady Musketeers to the locker room on a high note at halftime. The guard calmly splashed a 40-foot jumper as time expired.

Greenup County (5-19) supplied the effort but coach Matt Gilbert felt the level of competitiveness was not at a high enough level to begin the game.

“We came out and allowed 47 points in the first half,” Gilbert said. “In the second half, we kind of started to get it together. We started to execute and didn’t let their size and quickness affect us. It’s not that we can’t compete with someone like that. That’s why you play them, to get that experience. We could have done a lot better than what we did.”

The Kittens’ defensive pressure started to increase the pace, according to Gilbert, which led to 14 turnovers for Greenup County.

“We have faced this kind of team before,” Gilbert said. “We’ve played Wheelersburg, we’ve played Russell and the teams in Florida. We have handled that type of pressure, with the exception of a couple. We have to get out of our heads and just play basketball. Play as a team and slow down the pace. When we feel the pressure, we wanted to rush and that’s when we make mistakes.”

Emily Maynard led the Lady Musketeers with eight points and a pair of treys. Lexi Carroll and Rachel Bush each added six.

Ashland (15-8) received plenty of quality minutes from its bench in the second half. Jada Miller netted nine points, all from beyond the arc.

“Jada came out ready to go,” Bill Bradley said. “We got the rookies in there and it was their first varsity experience. The girls were cheering for them. They were all pulling for each other.”
