FRENCHBURG When Sarah Price was just 2 years old, she spent much of her time fending off older brothers Bryson and Hayden.
Price is a junior at Bath County now, and she helped fend off Menifee County in Thursday's Touchstone Energy Girls All “A” 16th Region title game. Her 17 points, 13 rebounds and four blocks gave Owingsville's Ladycats a 47-38 win.
Bath County meets Green County or Caverna of the Fifth Region in the state first round at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Frankfort Convention Center.
As is the case most any game, Price's face was almost as red as her road jersey.
“It does that to me,” she said.
Bath County (7-8) won its first small-school region title since back-to-back crowns in 2000-01. Understandably, Price doesn't remember that long ago.
“I'm sure I had some type of ball in my hand,” Price said.
Bath County coach Troy Lee Thomas didn't know it had been 14 years since the last championship until someone told him after the game.
“I'm actually speechless,” Thomas said. “I've gotta give credit to the girls and coaching staff.”
Thursday was also a sad day for many in Frenchburg.
The game was dedicated to Menifee County Judge-Executive and former boys and girls basketball coach J.D. Trimble. He passed away Wednesday after a long battle with cancer, and former players stood during a pre-game ceremony.
Problem was, Menifee County didn't score at all until sophomore center Marriah Back hit a layup off Ashton Woodard's assist 69 seconds into the second stanza, which junior Elizabeth Dotson followed with a bucket a minute later.
Here's where Menifee County's offense revived: Corie Baldwin's six points and Mara Walker's two put Menifee ahead, 13-12. Baldwin scored eight of her team's 10 points over the final 4:56, while Price accounted for Bath's last four.
Price's nine points and McKenna Moore's 3-pointer helped Bath County to a 34-26 lead with a 1:20 to go in the third quarter. Woodard's four points closed that to 34-30.
Baldwin led Menifee County with 16 points.
