This is something that has happened too many times in the past, and each time it has, we are shocked by the dangerously careless manner in which bus drivers have supervised their young passengers.

A 4-year-old girl was found in a school bus in Flemingsburg after the bus driver had taken the bus to a local car dealership for routine maintenance. The little girl was found unharmed by an employee of the dealership.

Fleming County Head Start director Toby Miller said the driver told her she didn’t see the child and that a monitor was busy helping a special needs child and was unable to help the driver clear the bus. But there is no acceptable excuse for leaving a child — particularly one so young — on a bus at the end of the route. The child apparently fell asleep on the bus, but it takes only a few seconds for a bus driver to walk the aisles of the bus to make sure all the children have deboarded. That should be required for all bus drivers. To fail to do so is inexcusable.

The bus driver has been suspended by the school district. That suspension should be permanent.
