ASHLAND The Ashland Police Department has identified the victim of a shooting that occurred at a residence on 29th Street across from Beech Street on Sunday night.
Police reports obtained by The Daily Independent indicate that 38-year-old Eddie R. Smith, of Ashland, was the victim of a shooting that occurred at his residence on the block of 3100 29th Street.
APD received a call at 8:16 p.m. about an individual who had run to a next-door neighbor’s house after sustaining gunshot wounds.
“The unit that works this particular area here got here very quickly,” APD Chief Todd Kelley said.
Police reports indicate that APD arrived on scene at 8:18 p.m.
Kelley said APD does not currently have a suspect. Police reports indicate the incident included the crime of first-degree burglary, when another individual used forced entry with a deadly weapon to enter the dwellings of the Smith residence. The weapon was identified in police reports as a handgun.
Boyd County EMS flew him to Cabell Huntington Hospital. Kelley said while Smith suffered multiple wounds, police did not know yet if it came from a single bullet or more than one bullet. The condition of Smith is unknown.
Officers spent the night canvassing the neighborhood, but as of Monday afternoon, the suspect had not been caught.
Kelley said police determined the shooting was specific to the individual at that particular residence, “based on the conditions.”
The shooter took off on foot, traveling southward along 29th Street.
“We don’t know whether or not (the shooter) had a vehicle or somebody waiting on them or whatever,” Kelley said.
