CATLETTSBURG The case against a Catlettsburg man charged with manslaughter has been delayed.

Michael Newsome, 34, was scheduled to appear in court on Friday, however, the case was reset until Oct. 18 due to a scheduling conflict.

Newsome was charged with manslaughter earlier this year after authorities said he left a woman alone in what proved to be a fatal overdose.

Boyd County Sheriff Bobby Jack Woods said Newsome was present on Dec. 21, 2018, when Kayla AmericanHorse, 35, of the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation, died at the Knights Inn in Ashland. Authorities said the two were abusing drugs together when AmericanHorse began to overdose.

“Newsome left AmericanHorse in the hotel room alone the night of the overdose, while she was overdosing,” Woods said. “This ultimately led to her death.”

The Boyd County Coroner's Office confirmed that AmericanHorse died due to a drug overdose.

“It's a rather unique case for this area,” Woods said.

The Boyd County Sheriff’s Department said an investigation is ongoing.
