ASHLAND – An underground gas tank exploded this morning at a Sunoco gas station in Ashland, according to Ashland police and firefighters.

Local firefighters and first responders were called to the scene at approximately 9 a.m. at the Sunoco gas station at 2201 Winchester Avenue.

“We responded to an explosion of an underground tank and we don't know anything right now on what caused it,” said Ashland Fire Chief Greg Ray.

Upon arrival the flames were blazing, Ray said. Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire and used a special foam to coat the ground.

“Now we are monitoring it,” said Ray. “We will investigate, look at security cameras, and probably have to excavate.”

Firefighters, emergency management, and police remained at the scene awaiting response of the Environmental Protection Agency and fire marshal.

Safety at the scene will remain in question until the EPA give the all-clear.

“We're taking readings of the air quality around it to make sure right now,” said Ray.
