ASHLAND An Ashland woman for the third year in a row is assembling care packages to send to service men and women deployed overseas.

To do so she is asking for community help in donating items for the packages and money to defray shipping costs.

Liza Dixon organized her first drive in 2018 and that year sent more than 200 boxes to troops stationed in 13 countries.

Last year the drive doubled that amount, with 416 packages sent out.

“When I turned 30, I wanted to do a charitable thing. A lot of my friends were doing them and I wanted to do something different,” she said. “My husband Brandon has family in the military and a couple of his cousins talked about care packages and how much they meant.”

The drive made an immediate impact on the community, she said. The first year she had hoped to send 10 boxes, but friends told friends and before long she had enough to fill 200, she said.

Afterward, she received calls and messages asking if she intended to repeat the drive. She also has received messages of gratitude from service men and women, including photos of boxes being opened.

Dixon gets children involved with the project, asking them to write letters and draw pictures she tucks into the packages. The messages from children “have been a huge hit,” she says.

One sizeable cost is shipping. Dixon has made arrangements with a firm that specializes in shipping to military destinations, but the $12 per box cost is still significant and financial donations will help.

Checks may be dropped off at the donation locations and Dixon has created a PayPal account; information is on the CarePackagesForSoldiersKY Facebook page.

The drive continues through April 17. Donations may be dropped off at the Boyd County PVA ofice or the Carter County PVA office.

Other dropoff locations are listed at CarePackagesForSoldiersKY on Facebook, or by contacting Dixon at 606-694-6486.
