Rocky Adkins is off to a strong start in the Democratic primary for governor tonight.

With 34 percent of the precincts reporting Adkins had 43 percent of the vote, or 55,207 total votes. Andy Beshear was in second place with 31.4 percent of the vote. Democrat Adam Edelen was third with 23 percent while Geoffrey Young was a distant fourth.

The vote tallies are unofficial. It was also very early in the race. It appeared, however, that Adkins was at a minimum making a strong showing and also benefiting from a vote split between Beshear and Edelen.

"It's clear Adkins has been very successful in turning out his vote in Eastern Kentucky," one commentator said on KET.

In the Republican primary Gov. Matt Bevin was at 51 percent with upstart Robert Goforth at 41 percent. The governor had a roughly 11,000 vote lead.
