ASHLAND Ashland Mayor Stephen Gilmore has proclaimed the coming Week as Boyd County Retired Teachers Week, coinciding with Kentucky Retired Teachers Appreciation Week.
The Boyd County Retired Teachers Association includes retired teachers from the Ashland, Boyd County and Fairview districts. They serve the community by continuing to support education through thousands of hours of volunteer service.
Theresa Kazee, BCRTA president, said the organization meets four times a year and each meeting is designed to support a specific community service. In September, members donated 297 school supply items to the Family Resource and Youth Service Centers in the Ashland, Boyd County and Fairview school districts. Socks and gloves will be donated to The Dressing Room in December. At the March meeting, cleaning supplies and personal hygiene items will be donated to Clean Start. Food items will be collected in June for River Cities Harvest.
BCRTA also awards a scholarship to a graduating senior going into education from one of the school districts the organization represents. In June, the BCRTA scholarship was awarded to Mykayla Akers, graduating senior from Paul G. Blazer High School. She is enrolled at Kentucky Christian University as an elementary education major.
BCRTA officers for the 2019-2020 year, in addition to Kazee, are: Jacquelin Thornberg, president-elect; David Miller, vice president; Cathy Jackson, secretary; and Nancy Douglas, treasurer.
