For the fourth time in recent months, authorities have discovered a methamphetamine lab in Rowan County.

On Monday, police located a lab in a residence a few hundred feet from Clearfield Elementary School, according to a news release from Operation UNITE.

The lab also was the second that has been discovered in Clearfield, a small community just south of Morehead.

The Rowan County Sheriff’s Department obtained information Monday evening about possible drug activity in a trailer on Partin Street and contacted UNITE detectives. Further investigation netted enough information for a search warrant.

“This was a complete lab,” said Iain Dalrymple, manager of UNITE’s Big Sandy Drug Task Force. “While it was not active, all the elements were present and there was evidence that it had recently been used to produce methamphetamine.”

Detectives are planning to interview the person who had been renting the trailer, Dalrymple said.

“Our preliminary investigation shows that children had been staying at the residence,” Dalrymple said. “At this time we don’t know if they were present while the meth was being produced or if they were exposed to the chemicals.”

Meth, a highly addictive stimulant that can be smoked, snorted or injected, is produced by combing cold pills with common household chemicals. The mixture gives off highly toxic vapors and also creates a substantial risk of explosion.

Assisting UNITE in cleaning up the site were members of the Morehead Police Department, Morehead Fire Department, Rowan Emergency Medical Services and the District 8 Hazardous Materials Team.

On March 29, nearly 200 homes in Clearfield were evacuated after an active meth lab was discovered in a mobile home park. The following day, an inactive lab was located on Rose Road in the Dry Creek area.

Then, on April 30, a hunter discovered a complete lab capable in the middle of a campsite near Cave Run Lake in the Daniel Boone National Forest.

UNITE detectives said the latest lab may be connected to the two labs found in March.
