Tri-State area residents have embraced recycling over the last year, saving millions of pounds of waste from being thrown in area landfills.

To celebrate the local enthusiasm, Rumpke Recycling is hosting an anniversary event at its southern Ohio buy-back center.

On Aug. 18, Rumpke will offer 85 cents per pound for aluminum cans. The special price, which is 15 cents more than the regular rate, will be available that day from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

“The community responded when we opened the Rumpke Recycling Buy-Back Center, and they continued showing support throughout the entire year,” said Mark Short, Rumpke district manager. “During the past year, customers received cash for recycling nearly 1.5 million pounds of material at the buy-back. The anniversary event is Rumpke Recycling’s way of saying thank you to our loyal customers.”

According to Rumpke, more than 8.87 million pounds of material has been recycled at the Hanging Rock facility since last August. That figure includes items collected through drop-off boxes and commercial programs in Ohio, West Virginia and Kentucky, along with items purchased by Rumpke at the buy-back center.

“It really says a lot about the Tri-State’s commitment to recycling that people are really looking for outlets and ways to recycle,” said Rumpke spokesman Jonathon Kissell.

He said Rumpke expects hundreds of customers to attend the buy-back anniversary event to get the special price on aluminum cans. Last year, more than 300 customers recycled nearly 20,000 pounds of aluminum cans — almost 700,000 cans — at the buy-back’s grand opening event.

“We are expecting a very similar turnout,” Kissell said, adding last year’s event was held on a Saturday during fewer hours.

“On the 18th this year, we’re operating normal business hours, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. We hope that helps spread out the crowd a little more through the day and gives everyone ample opportunity to come and receive the 85 cents per pound,” Kissell said.

Customers can also receive cash for newspapers, magazines, office paper, cardboard boxes, steel and other scrap metals, in addition to aluminum cans.

Rumpke also accepts material such as plastic bottles, steel cans and foil for donation only. A complete list of items is available online at
