It worked so well the first time that they’re doing it again.

The Carter County Summer Bash — the giant $100-a-ticket raffle benefiting local nonprofits — recently handed out $5,000 in its first Early Bird Drawing.

That drawing has prompted the sale of at least 3,000 Bash tickets already, said Cindy Stapleton, secretary of the Summer Bash committee.

So, due to the huge success, the committee will have a “Last Chance” Extra Drawing for $5,000 for anyone who purchases a ticket before June 30, she said.

The drawing will be July 15 in Olive Hill at the Carter County Shrine Bluegrass Festival.

In the Early Bird Drawing, Saleem Habash of Mount Sterling was the winner. The drawing took place during the Grayson Memory Days parade. It was the first year Habash had purchased a ticket.

This is the fourth year for the Summer Bash, a joint venture of the Carter County Fair Board and the Grayson Area Chamber of Commerce.

The organizations sell 10,000 tickets, which funds $600,000 in prizes and nets proceeds to address community projects. More than half a million dollars has been granted since 2003 to the Recreation Alliance for walking trails and fitness stations, the Citizens for Veterans Association for a park on Main Street, city of Olive Hill for a new slide for the pool and playground equipment, city of Grayson for picnic shelters and playground equipment in city park and Grahn Community Center for electrical and air conditioning equipment.

This year’s “main event” begins Sept. 8 with the Bash Bonus Drawing for a $50,000 grand prize and a Harley Davidson Heritage Softail Classic, Chevy and VW Beetle convertible, among other prizes. All ticketholders are treated to a concert with Marty Stuart and Blackhawk. Bonus tickets are $25 each and up to four may be purchased with every $100 Bash ticket.

The Bash Drawing will be Sept. 9, noon to 7 p.m., with a prize awarded every five minutes. Cash, cars, ATVs, big screen TVs, diamond jewelry, hot tubs, boats and more will be given away, including the grand prize of $100,000 cash.

The Bash will be at the new Carter County Fairgrounds on U.S. 60 west just over Radio Hill in Grayson.
