A Grayson man accused of shooting a woman in the head outside a now defunct Ashland bar pleaded guilty this week to attempted murder in Boyd County Circuit Court.

Troy E. Burton Jr., 23, received a 10-year sentence from Judge C. David Hagerman.

Burton entered the plea late Tuesday, a day before he was scheduled to stand trial.

Hagerman said Burton was blunt during the plea hearing.

“I asked him if he was admitting to shooting this woman with the intention of killing her, and he said yes,” Hagerman said.

The incident occurred last June, when police said Burton got into an argument with Stacy Barnett, 30, and Barnett’s boyfriend, after the three had left Wickie’s Bar and Grill following a birthday celebration for Burton.

Police said Burton was in the car with Barnett and her boyfriend, who were refusing to give Burton a ride home.

Burton got out of the car at 14th Street and Carter Avenue, pulled a gun and shot Barnett in the back of the head.

Barnett then drove to the Jolly Pirate doughnut shop on Winchester Avenue and asked for help.

Burton fled the scene of the shooting on foot, and was apprehended two days later at a home in Summit.

He was indicted by a Boyd County grand jury on a charge of attempted murder, which carries a sentence of up to 20 years in prison, last fall.

Hagerman said he rejected a plea deal that had Burton pleading guilty to second-degree assault. Although the amount of years given in the sentence would have also been 10 years, Hagerman said Burton would only have to serve 20 percent, or two years, of the sentence on the assault charge.

Attempted murder is categorized as a violent offense under state law, meaning Burton will have to serve 85 percent of the sentence before he is eligible for parole. He will also not earn any statutory or merited time off of his sentence.

“I have to make a finding of serious physical injury for a violent offense, which I think we have in this case,” Hagerman said.

Burton has been lodged at the Boyd County Detention Center since his arrest.
