Ever thought of taking up running? Wondered what it would be like to participate in a 5K? Now is your chance to do both.
The Boyd County Public Library will have a community Couch to 5K program and at the end of the seven-week program you can show off your new running skills during the third annual Love Your Library 5K.
The Couch to 5K will be led by Patty Lane and her son, Ross. Patty is the regional director of the Alliance for a Healthier Generation; Ross is studying kinesiology at the University of Kentucky. Both have impressive resumes, including Ironman Triathlon finishers. Along with the seven-week Couch to 5K program, you will receive valuable tips on stretching, staying hydrated and more.
Mark your calendars: the group will meet Tuesdays and Thursdays starting March 10 at the main branch of the Boyd County Public Library. We will meet rain or shine; if the weather is too bad, we will move inside, so come prepared to get moving! The program will end with you crossing the finish line at the third annual Love Your Library 5K on April 24.
I bet you are wondering what all this will cost? Since we are not focused on raising funds, the registration fee is one of the lowest in the Tri-State. If you are a BCPL card holder, the cost is $10. If you are not a BCPL card holder, the cost is $15. So why not get a card and save yourself five dollars? The cost covers your entry fee into the Love Your Library 5K, so you are getting a seven-week 5K training program free with your Love Your Library 5K registration fee.
For all you experienced runners out there who don’t want to do the Couch to 5k program, the cost is still $10 to pre-register with a BCPL card, $15 to pre-register for non-BCPL card holders and $20 for everyone the day of the event. Register at any branch of the Boyd County Public Library or at tristateracer.com.
Trophies will be given to the first two overall male and female finishers. Awards will be given to the top three finishers in each male and female age group. There will be lots of door prizes and refreshments the day of the event.
For those of you who aren’t into running, the Love Your Library event will include a 1.25 mile (one lap around Central Park) walk at 6 p.m. Cost of the walk is $8 pre-registered with a BCPL card, $10 pre-registered non-BCPL card holders. Awards will be given to the first five walkers who come across the finish line. So come on down, walk a lap and show your support of reading and a healthy community.
All participants of the Couch to 5K training program, the Love Your Library 1.25 mile walk and 5K will receive shirts and BCPL swag bags.
But wait, there’s more!
If your business would like to be a sponsor, there are four levels to choose from; Platinum $500, Gold $250, Silver $150 and Bronze $100. You can donate door prizes and/or food for the event and have your business recognized on the race shirts. Along with exposure for your business or service through BCPL’s marketing and recognition on the race shirts, you will have the opportunity to be involved in the event by setting up a booth to showcase your business or service. In 2014, we had 31 sponsors who either did a sponsorship level or donated food and/or door prizes. Also, the event attracted about 450 either as walkers, runners, volunteers or spectators.
There will be something for everyone at the Love Your Library 5K event so come join the fun!
