ASHLAND Local nonprofit continues tradition of First Friday with all things Kentucky Derby on May 3.

Ashland in Motion will host another First Friday on the eve of the 145th run for the roses on Friday in downtown Ashland from 5 p.m. until midnight.

Whitney Lowe, director of Ashland in Motion, said the downtown block party features a cruise-in, live music, an outdoor beer garden, extended downtown shopping hours and children’s activities.

Lowe said the First Friday Cruise-in welcomes all cars, trucks, jeeps and bikes to display their rides and connect with area car enthusiasts. Lowe said all makes and models are welcome and dash plaques will be given to the first 50 registrants. Lowe said attendees are encouraged to vote for the May’s People Choice Award winner, sponsored by NAPA Auto Parts.

A press release from Ashland in Motion said the cars may begin parking at 3 p.m. on Winchester Avenue between 14th St. and 17th St. Vehicles may enter and exit the venue via 16th St. and Greenup Ave. Winchester Ave. will be closed at 14th St. and 17th St. to ensure pedestrian safety. Registration is $5 and enters vehicle owners into a nightly door prize drawing said the press release.

The Fat Patty’s Beer Garden, located on 15th St. adjacent to the restaurant, will feature outdoor seating along with craft and domestic beer options and food service said the press release. Live music will be performed by The Whipps beginning at 6 p.m. and the Sugarbeats at 8 p.m.

Children are invited to make their own Derby hat inside GetFiddle Custom Shop located at 1549 Winchester Ave. from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. said the press release. Lowe said that the hats and decorations will be provided. Children’s activities are provided free of charge thanks to the generosity of Marathon Petroleum said the press release.

GetFiddlle Custom Shop will also have a contest at 7 p.m. where participants can enter their Derby Hat creation for the chance to win a $50 Visa gift card said the press release. Derby hats must be made by the entering participant. Hats may be made during the event at Getfiddle Custom Shop or made off-site and worn to the competition. All ages are welcome. Three winners will be selected in the following categories: Best of Show; Funniest; and Most Original. There is no fee to enter.

In addition to the Derby Hat Contest, Getfiddle Custom Shop will also feature the talents of E.K. Station at 5 p.m. and David Austen and Baylee Morgan at 6 p.m. said the press release.

The Camayo Arcade will feature complimentary wine, mimosas and Mint Juleps in honor of the Derby along with a live musical act said the press release.

Children’s inflatables are located on Judd Plaza and 16th Street and are hosted by BC Tool & Party Rental said the press release. Inflatable jumping is unlimited during the event and is $5 per child.

New this season is the “First Friday Bucks” initiative said the press release. Members Choice Credit Union awards shop small supporters with instant discounts at their favorite locally-owned stores and restaurants.
