Suspect in shooting death

ASHLAND – An Ashland man was shot to death Tuesday night and authorities later arrested a suspect in Ohio.

Lawrence McCoy Jr., 30, of Ashland was killed at the 3400 block of Central Avenue last night according to Boyd County Coroner Mark Hammond.

Hammond said that McCoy was taken by ambulance to King’s Daughters Medical Center and was pronounced dead at the hospital, Hammond said. McCoy had multiple gun shot wounds, said Hammond.

Police arrested James Reed, 47, of Ironton early Wednesday and put him in the Lawrence County jail. Reed is a suspect in the shooting and faces the charge of murder, according to police reports.

McCoy’s remains will be transported to Frankfort on Thursday for an autopsy by a state medical examiner, Hammond said.

“The investigation is still ongoing but is related to a domestic incident,” Ashland police wrote in a Facebook post. “Ashland Police officers secured a warrant for Murder for Reed.”

According to police reports, Reed and McCoy were acquaintances.

Authorities said Reed was arrested at a residence outside of Ironton and taken into custody without incident. Reed also had an outstanding warrant being held in Lawrence County, Ohio, according to authorities.

Reed will be transported to the Boyd County Detention Center and potentially charged in Boyd County courts, according to the Boyd County Commonwealth Attorney's Office.

Police seized a smart phone, a notebook with song lyrics, multiple blood swabs, live 9mm ammunition, multiple 9mm shell casings, a witnesses shirt covered in blood, the victim's shirt with bullet holes, a semi-automatic rifle, and a 9mm semi-automatic pistol, according to police reports.

Police reports indicate there were five witnesses to the crime.
