RUSSELL The 31-year-old man shot over the weekend inside a Russell home has died, according to police.

Brett Browning, of Ashland, died of his wounds at 11 p.m. Sunday night at Cabell-Huntington Hospital in West Virginia, said Detective Phillip Kearns of the Russell Police Department. Browning was shot inside a home on Short White Oak Road at around 11:30 p.m. Saturday, according to police. No charges have been filed in the case, Kearns said.

“We’re still doing interviews and following up on leads,” Kearns said. “Then I’ll need to discuss it with the Commonwealth’s Attorney.”

Initially the shooting was reported as a home invasion, according to a police press release. However, Kearns said Monday that he is “confident this was not a home invasion.”

“This was originally coded as a home invasion at dispatch, but our investigation has shown this was not a home invasion,” Kearns said.

However, the detective can’t elaborate at this time on the circumstances surrounding the shooting due to the ongoing investigation.

The detective did note that only two people — the suspected shooter and the shooting victim — were inside the house at the time the shot was fired.

Browning’s body will transported back to Kentucky for an autopsy, Kearns said.
