Donald Edward and Wanda Lee Caudill of Russell celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary on Aug. 13.
The couple met on a blind date when each of their best friends decided they would make the perfect couple, so a double date was set up. They went to a local hangout, the Hamburger Inn, on Winchester Avenue in Ashland where Donald played “Slow Boat to China” on the jukebox multiple times that evening. After 70 years, that is still their song.
They were married at the Ashland Methodist Church by the Rev. Thomas Chandler in a single-ring ceremony.
Mr. Caudill was born in 1928 in Russell, the eldest son of the late Charles and Marie Caudill. He attended the Russell Independent schools and served in the U.S. Army Air Corp from 1946 to 1949 during the Occupational Force of Japan. He worked for the C&O as a machinist until his retirement in 1978.
Mrs. Caudill was born in 1930 in Russell, the youngest child of the late Lindsay and Vada Miller. She is a graduate of the Russell High School class of 1949. She worked for the Claude Fannin Co. for 30 years and is a member of Bridges Christian Church in Russell and an active member of the Flatwoods Lions Club.
They enjoyed traveling and have visited all 50 states, as well as Canada, Mexico, several European countries, Australia and New Zealand. Many of their travels were road trips that included camping in a tent and cooking meals on a Coleman camp stove.
The couple purchased a lot in Kenwood Acres in 1952, a new subdivision at the time. They transferred to Toledo, Ohio, for five years and when they returned in 1957, they started working on building their home. They moved into it in 1959 and still live there today.
