Gym reserved for soldier’s funeral

PAINTSVILLE — Friends and family of PFC Joshua A. Gray will join to honor his memory during a visitation service at Johnson Central Middle School on Friday, with funeral services there the following morning.

The body of PFC Gray, 21, of Van Lear, who died while on active duty in Afghanistan was carried home this week, arriving at the Big Sandy Airport in neighboring Martin County on Monday morning. According to the Department of Defense, Gray died Feb. 10 at Bagram Airfield, Afghanistan, as the result of a non-combat related incident.

Gray’s visitation service will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday in the gym at Johnson Central Middle School. His funeral is set for 11 a.m. Saturday, also at the middle school. Gov. Steve Beshear has ordered flags at all state office buildings be lowered to half-staff on the day Gray is buried.

Friends say Gray joined the army in the fall of  2012, and was assigned to the Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion, 10th Mountain Division at Fort Drum, N.Y. during October, 2013. He was deployed to Afghanistan in January, where Fort Drum officials said he worked as a satellite communications system operator maintainer.
