Area blanketed with snow; schools cancelled

ASHLAND — The ice and snow that clobbered the area Sunday night and this morning has led to widespread school closings to start the week.

All area schools are closed. In addition, Ashland Community and Technical College, Morehead State’s Ashland campus and Shawnee State University are all closed.

The Ashland-Boyd County Health Department is also closed today.

Ashland road crews are out and reporting slick conditions with a layer of ice beneath the snow-covered roadways. They are urging drivers to use extreme caution.

Lawrence County (Ohio) Sheriff Jeff Lawless says the county is under a level 2 snow emergency. The roads are snow- and ice-covered. A full crew is out plowing and treating roads. ODOT is also working on the roads.

Motorists are advised to use extreme caution.

There are no significant power outages as the ice fall wasn’t as bad as first expected.

A winter storm warning remains in effect until 4 p.m. today.

Snow is likely today with cloudy skies gradually becoming mostly sunny with a high near 22. Total snow accumulation of around an inch is possible today. Tonight will be partly cloudy with a low around 6.

Tuesday will be mostly sunny with a high near 36. Tuesday night will be partly cloudy with a low near 17.
