Fundraiser with Simms brings $136,700 for MSU football

MOREHEAD — A Super Bowl MVP returned to Morehead State on Saturday to help raise money for his former Eagles football program.

“A Night With Phil Simms,” a fundraising event that included dinner, a meet-and-greet with the Hall of Famer and entertainment from several speakers as well as an auction.  The event raised $136,700.

Simms, who started at MSU from 1975 through 1978, entered the draft in 1979 and was selected seventh in the first round of the draft by the New York Giants., where he spent his entire 14-year career.

He led the Giants to the Super Bowl championship in 1987, but an injury kept him out of the 1991 post season, when the Giants beat the Buffalo Bills.

Since his retirement in 1994, Simms has worked as a sports broadcaster for ESPN, NBC and CBS, where he has been since 1998.

Guests paid anywhere from $75 to $1,500 to attend the dinner, which helped raise money for the MSU football program.

Simms said that he has been in contact with MSU head football coach Rob Tenyer, and said “I know he (Tenyer) has great plans and is going to do a terrific job here at Morehead and I hope tonight is the start of some of those plans to go forward,” he said. “I’m excited, and I’m going to try to do what I can to help the process out.”

During a press conference before the event, Simms reminisced about his time at Morehead State University.  “Even though we didn’t win when I was here, we enjoyed our experience playing,” he said.  “We played hard, and I’m telling you we worked hard, too. That’s all you can do.”

He also said the friendships made during his time at MSU were “moments you just don’t forget.”
