BOWLING GREEN — Ashland surprised Henderson County 56-48 in the opening game of the Girls State Tournament on Wednesday afternoon at Diddle Arena on the campus of Western Kentucky University.
The Kittens were led by a career-game from Shelby Gransberry, who collected 24 points, six rebounds and blocked three shots.
Ashland (25-8) plays at 1 p.m. (EST) Friday in the state quarterfinals.
Mykassa Robinson added 11 points, three rebounds and three steals, and Alexis Robinson had nine points, four rebounds and two steals after battling early foul trouble.
Ashland Blazer shot 50 percent and outscored Henderson County 19-6 in the final period. In fact, the Region 16 champion Kittens didn't allow the Lady Colonels a fourth-quarter field goal until 33 seconds remained in the contest.
Kacie Wallace scored 12 points for Region 2 champion Henderson County (24-6), which came into the tournament ranked fourth. Deasia Outlaw had 10 points and six rebounds.
