Home on Carr Street suffers smoke, water damage

ASHLAND — Ashland Fire Department responded to a basement fire at a home on Carr Street on Wednesday morning.

The power was out in the neighborhood most of the night after the evening storm and when it came back on, the homeowner smelled smoke, according to Battalion Chief Duane Trimble.

“They were upstairs when the power came back on,” Trimble said. “They didn’t have power last night. When the power came back on, she smelled smoke.”

When they walked down, the basement wall was on fire from the breaker box, Trimble said.

A neighbor tried to put out the fire with an extinguisher to no avail. The AFD quickly responded, busted down the basement door and put out the fire before it got into the structure, Trimble said.

“As soon as she smelled smoke, the smoke detectors went off,” he said. “We got there pretty quick. It could have been a lot worse.”

The homeowners escaped without injury. The house suffered smoke and water damage, Trimble said, but was confined to the basement. Most of the water damage was from a room with the breaker box.
