ANN DAVIS GALLERY

Through First Friday of July, the Kentucky Watercolor Show Award winners will be on display.

In the Logan Room, digital prints by Jennifer Spade, who has a master of arts degree from Marshall, will be continue to be displayed.

July 20, 6 to 9 p.m. — opening reception for a memorial show for artists Todd Walker and Jim Greenslate. Live music by Michael Garvin and Dan Cowan.

ART OF THE REDEEMED

STUDIO & GALLERY

The gallery is in Suite 206, on the second floor of the historic Camayo Arcade, 1536 Winchester Ave., in downtown Ashland. It is home to working artists Gail Kirtz and Rodney Chapman, both of whom work in various media and offer their original art and prints for sale.

Special Exhibit — Toothpick Constructions by Les Hayes which include a replica of his home, the “Spider Web House,” Cracker Barrel restaurants, the old Russell High School, houses, barns, churches and depots.

On Exhibit — New impressionistic landscapes and seascapes in oil by Kirtz. Also on exhibit are pastels, acrylics and mixed-media works.

On Exhibit — New contemporary works by Chapman in acrylic and mixed-media. He is accepting portrait commissions.

Openings are still available in classes or private lessons in pastel, acrylic and oil.

The studio and gallery are handicapped accessible with an elevator and open by appointment.

BANANA TREE STUDIOS

July 13, 5 to 8 p.m. — All-male art exhibit featuring photographer Tom Ross of Maysville; pastel artist Jack Donahue of Cincinnati; and multi-media artist Ken Swinson of Augusta, Ga. Light refreshments will be served.

HIGHLANDS MUSEUM and

DISCOVERY CENTER

Art and Animals — July 10, 11 12, 9 a.m. to noon, for rising fourth- to sixth-graders at the museum. Start down the Ohio with John James Audubon and do your own live animal drawing. Learn about the Native American respect for the animal world and create sculpey totems. Go 3-D with origami animals and become an advocate for pets with a poster design. Taught by art educator Nancy Adams. Cost: $30 members, $35 non-members.

“Harry Potter Adventure” — From 5 to 9 p.m. July 20 and from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. July 21 at the museum. You’ve seen the movie, so while waiting for the book, join in activities based on Harry’s adventures at Hogwarts. Cost is $5 for non-members and $2.50 for members. Includes admission to the museum and all Harry Potter activities. Advance tickets now available.

STARLAB Summer Astronomy Workshops — July 17, 18, 19 for rising third- through fifth-graders; July 24, 25 26 for rising first- and second-graders. 10 a.m. to noon. STARLAB, the portable planetarium, is ready for the July night sky. Learn the stories behind the constellations and the planets and identify them in the summer night sky. Each day will be spent both inside STARLAB and with classroom projects. Workshops stand along, so students can register for one day or all three. Cost per day: $7.50 members, $10 non-members..

“A Night at the Museum: Highlands Style” — From 6:30 to 8:15 p.m. July 27. Experience the Highlands after the lights go out and everything comes to life. Family friendly with surprising and startling twists to your basic museum tour. Join us as our student volunteers and some very special guests make your evening come alive with fun. Tours begin every 15 minutes. Cost is $5 for nonmembers and $2.50 for members. Advance tickets are now available.

“Paws Along the River Art Show” — Through July 20. Glimpse the street cats and dogs that make up downtown Ashland’s latest public art project and then come inside for a 2-D showing all kinds of animal friends. A new juried art show that showcases the talent and creativity of Tri-State artists.

“From Sea to Shining Sea: 200 Years of America’s Coast Survey” — Through Oct. 31. A pictorial exhibit from the Smithsonian and NOAA celebrating 200 years of accomplishments and scientific contributions in mapping our nation’s coast. Photos, charts and artwork provide information and resources on boating, shipping and maritime history.

“Styles and Textiles: Crazy Quilts from the Nineteenth Century” — Visit our textile area where elegant fabrics and elaborate stitches were designed in unconventional and decorative ways for the Victorian home.

Special Student Events:

Somewhere in Time — Pick up your passport in our FETCH! Lab. Pack your bag and travel back in time, around the globe and toward the stars. Find our passport stamping stations and learn how people live around the world. On-going activities throughout the summer beginning Friday. Free with regular admission.

The museum is at 1620 Winchester Ave. Admission is $5 adults, $4 seniors, children and students. Members and children younger than 2 admitted free.

“Image of Appalachia,” a collection of more than 60 black-and-white photographs of Eastern Kentucky and West Virginia from the 1920s and 1930s, is on display.

“The Leming Gallery,” a collection of reminiscences reflected in the work of local artists Jim Marsh, Steve McClements, Billy Kersey, Buzzy Leming and Caroline Wilson will be on display.

PAINTED PALETTE ART STUDIO

Through July 31 — Louisville Photo Biennial 2007 expo will feature six weeks of shows at 22 galleries, two museums and a national conference. The Pendleton Art Centers and Newport on the Levee announce the opening of the Pendleton Art Center at Newport on the Levee, Plaza Level. The gallery, which opens July 2, presents exclusively the works of artists from the three Pendleton Art Centers in Cincinnati, Ashland and Rising Sun, Ind. Gallery hours: Monday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Sunday, noon to 6 p.m.



SPEED ART MUSEUM

“The Best of Photography and Film from George Eastman House Collection” — Through Sept. 16, this exhibit brings images that changed the way we view the world. Admission $10 for nonmembers or free for members.
