The featured artist is Robert Hutton with his collection of pen and ink drawings and terra-cotta sculptures.

ART OF THE REDEEMED

STUDIO & GALLERY

The gallery is in Suite 206, on the second floor of the historic Camayo Arcade, 1536 Winchester Ave., in downtown Ashland. It is home to working artists Gail Kirtz and Rodney Chapman, both of whom work in various media and offer their original art and prints for sale.

Special Exhibit — Toothpick Constructions by Les Hayes which include a replica of his home, the “Spider Web House,” Cracker Barrel restaurants, the old Russell High School, houses, barns, churches and depots.

On Exhibit — New impressionistic landscapes and seascapes in oil by Kirtz. Also on exhibit are pastels, acrylics and mixed-media works.

On Exhibit — New contemporary works by Chapman in acrylic and mixed-media. He is accepting portrait commissions.

Openings are still available in classes or private lessons in pastel, acrylic and oil.

The studio and gallery are handicapped accessible with an elevator and open by appointment.

BANANA TREE STUDIOS

“Paws Along the River Art Show” — Through July 20. Glimpse the street cats and dogs that make up downtown Ashland’s latest public art project and then come inside for a 2-dimensional showing of the furry friends. A new juried art show that showcases the talent and creativity of Tri-State artists.

“Styles and Textiles: Crazy Quilts from the Nineteenth Century” — Visit our textile area where elegant fabrics and elaborate stitches were designed in unconventional and decorative ways for the Victorian home.

“FETCH! Challenge Lab” — Saturdays in June: Try activities from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. that you’ve seen on PBS’s FETCH! This month features “Float Your Boat.” Activities are free with regular admission.

Special Student Events:

Every Child is an Artist — Wednesdays in June (13, 20 and 27) from 12:45 to 2:15 p.m. Preschool art experience for child (ages three to five) and caregivers. Includes story and playtime. Call to register. Students can register for one day or all three. Cost per session is $30 for members and $35 for non-members. Cost per day is $10 for members and $12 for non-members. Discount for second child in family.

Somewhere in Time — Pick up your passport in our FETCH! Lab. Pack your bag and travel back in time, around the globe and toward the stars. Find our passport stamping stations and learn how people live around the world. On-going activities throughout the summer beginning Friday. Free with regular admission.

Ongoing exhibits:

“A Tree House of My Own” — What do you see when you’re up in a tree? Learn about the natural world around us! Bugs and beetles, butterflies and snakes, animals and birds, plants and flowers all take their place in your own backyard.

“The World at War: Answering the Call” — The Appalachian region has always given up its sons and daughters to war. Reflect on the public and private sacrifices made by the men and women who fought during the wars of the 20th century.

“The Front Porch” — What did we do for fun before computers and TV? Before air-conditioning and the mall? Try some time honored games and traditions, plus a chance to visit with your neighbors in a swing or catch a cool breeze in a rocker. Come “sit a while” and reflect on a leisurely part of times past.

“C.I. Haeberle Medical Exhibit” — Step into the world of health care circa 1940s and 1950s when late night house calls were made into homes from medical facilities and payment was made with chickens and produce.

“Frank and Margaret Adkins Aviation Exhibit” — Visit this exciting ongoing exhibit in the museum’s Discovery Center, which features airplanes, a wind tunnel and hands-on activities focusing on the history of flight.

“Poage’s Landing: Life on the River” — Learn about how people live and the jobs they do along the Ohio River in this ongoing exhibit. Visitors can pilot Little Joe, a towboat. Explore the streetscape of Poage’s Landing and imagine yourself to be a banker, a grocer, a chef, a doctor or an EMT!

“Country Music Heritage Hall” — Explore the memorabilia and biographies of several well-known country music artists who came from towns either on or near U.S. 23. Learn more about Loretta Lynn, Crystal Gayle, Ricky Skaggs, Hylo Brown, Miley and Billy Ray Cyrus, Patty Loveless, Tom T. Hall and Naomi, Wynonna and Ashley Judd. Visit the Music Quilt, the interactive sound sculpture where everyone can be a musician!

The museum is at 1620 Winchester Ave. Admission is $5 adults, $4 seniors, children and students. Members and children younger than 2 admitted free.

HUNTINGTON MUSEUM of ART

Art Classes:

Digital Photography and Computer Techniques — June 6 to 27 on Wednesdays from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. for four sessions with instructor David Fattaleh in Studio 3. Cost is $65 for HMA members and $80 for nonmembers.

Sculpting — June 6 to July 25 on Wednesdays from 6 to 8 p.m. for eight sessions in Studio 4. Cost is $95 for HMA members and $120 for nonmembers.

Hand Building and Wheel Throwing for Adults — June 11 to July 30 from 6 to 8 p.m. on Mondays with instructor Kathleen Kneafsey in Studio 4. Cost is $95 for HMA members and $120 for nonmembers.

Macy’s presents Lorna Simpson’s “Easy to Remember” as past of a year long exhibit of video projects at HMA titled “VIDEO: Beyond the Frame.” Exhibit available through Sunday.

“Joseph A. Smith: Walter Gropius Master Artist” exhibit will continue through May 13. The exhibit features illustrations and paintings by the well known book illustrator.

Exhibitions on Permanent Display:

“The Wilbur E. Myers Art Glass Collection;” “The HMA Glass Collection;” “Herman P. Dean Firearms Collection;” “In the Grand Manner: Silver and Portraits of Great Britain;” “Touma Near Eastern Gallery;” “The Education Gallery;” and The C. Fred Edwards Conservatory (Subtropical Plant Conservatory).

Hours are 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday; 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday; and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday.

JESSE STUART FOUNDATION

Exhibits:

“Image of Appalachia,” a collection of more than 60 black-and-white photographs of Eastern Kentucky and West Virginia from the 1920s and 1930s, is on display.

“The Leming Gallery,” a collection of reminiscences reflected in the work of local artists Jim Marsh, Steve McClements, Billy Kersey, Buzzy Leming and Caroline Wilson will be on display.

PENDLETON ART CENTER

The Pendleton Art Center at 1537-1539 Winchester Ave., is home to artists from the Tri-State area who have a wide range of talents.

SPEED ART MUSEUM

“From Vessel to Sculpture: Ceramics at the Speed” — Through June 24. Admission is free to this exhibit.

“From Folk to Modern: Kentucky Pottery, 1900-1950” — On view in the Museum’s Focus Galleries until June 24. Presenting more than 40 objects drawn from several important private collections, this is the first exhibition to trace the transformation of Kentucky pottery as production shifted from utilitarian wares to art pottery.

“The Best of Photography and Film from George Eastman House Collection” — June 19 to Sept. 16, this exhibit brings images that changed the way we view the world. Admission $10 for nonmembers or free for members.

Parking is available at the Speed’s parking garage, adjacent to the Museum. Access to the parking garage is available from Third Street. Parking in the garage is $3.
