ANN DAVIS GALLERY

The featured artist for First Friday is Robert Hutton. He is a retired Marshall art professor who specializes in drawings and paintings.

In the Logan Room, digital prints by Jennifer Spade, who has an MA from Marshall, will be displayed.

Music will be provided by Sheldon Road.

Pottery instructor Bill Meadows will have classes on Mondays through May 21 or Tuesdays through May 22. For sign up information, please call (304) 654-9948.

ART OF THE REDEEMED

STUDIO & GALLERY

The gallery is in Suite 206, on the second floor of the historic Camayo Arcade, 1536 Winchester Ave., in downtown Ashland. It is home to working artists Gail Kirtz and Rodney Chapman, both of whom work in various media and offer their original art and prints for sale.

A new limited edition Giclee print will be available for sale, “Transformation” by Gail Kirtz.

On Exhibit — New abstract colored pencil drawings and other contemporary works by Chapman. Also on exhibit are several new works by Kirtz, including a new rendition in oil of “Bennett’s Mill Covered Bridge.”

Classes are available in oil, acrylic and pastel.

Trumpet lessons and tutoring will be offered by Chapman at the studio. Chapman has a bachelor of music degree in trumpet performance from MSU and has performed professionally in the United States, Canada and the Caribbean.

April 21 and 22 — A two-day workshop in mixed media collage by Kirtz. Space is limited; registration required.

The studio and gallery are handicapped accessible with an elevator.

BANANA TREE STUDIOS

DOODLES STUDIO & GALLERY

Tuesdays — Brenda Flynn will host a traditional mosaic class beginning at 6 p.m. April 10. The class will be one hour on Tuesdays and Thursdays for three weeks. Cost is $110, which also covers the take-home supplies.

Class sizes are limited to four persons per class, so please register as soon as possible with Flynn. Another class will begin May 1 teaching paper mosaic. Cost will be $65. These classes will be from 6 to 7 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays for three weeks.

Special exhibits:

“The Faces of Hunger and Homelessness” — On display through April 15. This exhibit inaugurates a new traveling photographic essay, the result of a survey conducted by the area’s Shelter of Hope. The focus for this exhibit is community awareness; the data and photographs demonstrate the impact and diversity of poverty in our community.

“Slam Dunk! The Basketball Memorabilia of John Carpenter” — This exhibit will continue through Saturday. Catch Kentucky’s basketball fever and see the memorabilia and autographed pictures taken from the world-renowned collection of Firebrick’s favorite son, John Carpenter.

“Styles and Textiles: Crazy Quilts from the Nineteenth Century” — Visit our textile area where elegant fabrics and elaborate stitches were designed in unconventional and decorative ways for the Victorian home.

FETCH! Challenge Lab — Try the activities that you’ve seen on PBS’s “FETCH!” This month’s challenge is “Go Fly a Kite.” Exhibit is free with regular admission.

Ongoing exhibits:

“A Tree House of My Own” — What do you see when you’re up in a tree? Learn about the natural world around us! Bugs and beetles, butterflies and snakes, animals and birds, plants and flowers all take their place in your own backyard.

“The World at War: Answering the Call” — The Appalachian region has always given up its sons and daughters to war. Reflect on the public and private sacrifices made by the men and women who fought during the wards of the 20th century.

“The Front Porch” — What did we do for fun before computers and TV? Before air-conditioning and the mall? Try some time honored games and traditions, plus a chance to visit with your neighbors in a swing or catch a cool breeze in a rocker. Come “sit a while” and reflect on a leisurely part of times past.

“C.I. Haeberle Medical Exhibit” — Step into the world of health care circa 1940s and 1950s when late night house calls were made into homes from medical facilities and payment was made with chickens and produce.

“Frank and Margaret Adkins Aviation Exhibit” — Visit this exciting ongoing exhibit in the museum’s Discovery Center, which features airplanes, a wind tunnel and hands-on activities focusing on the history of flight.

“Poage’s Landing: Life on the River” — Learn about how people live and the jobs they do along the Ohio River in this ongoing exhibit. Visitors can pilot Little Joe, a towboat. Explore the streetscape of Poage’s Landing and imagine yourself to be a banker, a grocer, a chef, a doctor or an EMT!

“Country Music Heritage Hall” — Explore the memorabilia and biographies of several well-known country music artists who came from towns either on or near U.S. 23. Learn more about Loretta Lynn, Crystal Gayle, Ricky Skaggs, Hylo Brown, Miley and Billy Ray Cyrus, Patty Loveless, Tom T. Hall and Naomi, Wynonna and Ashley Judd. Visit the Music Quilt, the interactive sound sculpture where everyone can be a musician!

HUNTINGTON MUSEUM of ART

On exhibit at the museum at 2033 McCoy Road:

“Tres Cher: Quintessentially French Works from the Collection of the HMA” — Will continue through Sunday and features work in a variety of media by artists such as Paul Gaugin, Maurice de Vlaminck, Auguste Rodin and Rene Lalique, among others.

Hours are 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday; 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday; and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday.

General admission is $3 per person or $10 for a family of four or more. Admission is free to museum members, all school tours and to the public on Tuesdays.

JESSE STUART FOUNDATION

Exhibits:

“Image of Appalachia,” a collection of more than 60 black-and-white photographs of Eastern Kentucky and West Virginia from the 1920s and 1930s, is on display.

“The Leming Gallery,” a collection of reminiscences reflected in the work of local artists Jim Marsh, Steve McClements, Billy Kersey, Buzzy Leming and Caroline Wilson will be on display.

PENDLETON ART CENTER

First Friday activities will be in full swing from 5 to 9 p.m. with music by Eddie Riffe and a special showing of artwork by ACTC students in their classroom in the lower level of the Pendleton (6 to 9 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to noon Saturday). The works will also be shown from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday and noon to 1:30 p.m. Tuesdays through Thursdays during April.

The Pendleton Art Center at 1537-1539 Winchester Ave., is home to artists from the Tri-State area who have a wide range of talents.

The studios are open for First Friday each month from 5 to 9 p.m. and the following day for Second Look Saturday from noon to 4 p.m. Some studios are open daily; some are open by appointment with the artist. Contact information for artists is available in the lobby.

SPEED ART MUSEUM

“From Vessel to Sculpture: Ceramics at the Speed” — Through June 24. Admission is free to this exhibit.

“From Folk to Modern: Kentucky Pottery, 1900-1950” — On view in the Museum’s Focus Galleries until June 24. Presenting more than 40 objects drawn from several important private collections, this is the first exhibition to trace the transformation of Kentucky pottery as production shifted from utilitarian wares to art pottery.

Parking is available at the Speed’s parking garage, adjacent to the Museum. Access to the parking garage is available from Third Street. Parking in the garage is $3.
