A Lexington gynecologist accused of removing a woman's healthy ovaries has been cleared in a malpractice suit.
The jury deliberated for five hours on Tuesday. Nine of the twelve jurors concluded that Dr. Michael Guiler did not violate standards of medical care. Three jurors disagreed.
Connie Grimes, 38, filed a lawsuit against Guiler in 2003, saying he performed an unnecessary procedure. Grimes signed a consent form but said she did not fully understand the consequences of having her ovaries removed at age 31.
She is one of six women who have sued Guiler.
Guiler attracted national media attention because of other lawsuits filed in 2003, alleging he had etched "UK", for the University of Kentucky, his alma mater, on uteruses before he removed them.
