2000 Girls State Champion Lady Comets honored

It was 10 years ago that a girls' basketball team from the tiny town of Olive Hill made 16th Region history.

West Carter High School defeated Shelby County to win the state championship, the first girls' state title in region history and only the second title (boy or girl) in the last 50 years.

Legendary coach John "Hop" Brown was the man behind the team of basketball stars that included his daughter Kandi Brown, the Sweet Sixteen MVP, Penny Gearheart, Meghan Hillman, Mandy Sterling and Kayla Day. Kandi's all-around play, Gearheart's ballhandling, Hillman's inside play and Sterling and Day's long-range shooting ability led to a 38-1 season.
