Colonel Bill Williams celebration

The Col. Bill Williams Greenup Heritage Music Festival drew more nearly 500 people to the Greenbo Lake State Resort Park amphitheater on Friday.

Williams was a lifelong railroad man and blues player from Greenup who was recognized late in life for his unique style.

When he died in 1973, Williams left behind a legacy as an intricate self-taught guitarist with a repertoire spanning blues, ragtime instrumentals, hymns and 'patriotics,' a word he used in reference to almost any pop standard.

His son, Ron, attended the festival. He told the audience he and his family were honored that the people of Greenup County "were giving his father his due."

Acoustic guitarist and vocalist Rory Block headlined the blues night of the festival, which will feature various musical genres.

The quartet KY B3 4 and guitarist/vocalist Greg Schaber also took the stage on Friday.

Festivities continue though the weekend with bluegrass and country on Saturday and a Singspiration Jubilee on Sunday.
