East Carter Middle School eighth-graders Aleigh Oney and Savannah Smith recently received gold medals and perfect 300 scores in the STAR (Students Taking Action with Recognition) Events at Family, Career and Community Leaders of America’s 2006 National Leadership Meeting at the Opryland Hotel in Nashville, Tenn.
Oney is the daughter of Arnold and Marsha Oney of Grayson and Smith is the daughter of Brian and Paige Smith of Grayson.
For their project, “A Better Smile Today… A Healthier YOU Tomorrow,” the students developed and implemented a program for preschoolers through fifth grade to assist them with better hygiene habits.
Three Northeast Kentucky students have been named National Merit Scholarship semifinalists.
Hunter C. Davis and Kevin M. England, both of Paul G. Blazer High School, and Alice N. Weaver of Rowan County High School are eligible to continue in the competition for about 8,200 awards that will be offered in the spring.
About 90 percent of semifinalists reach the finalist stage and about half of those receive scholarships, which are based on skill, accomplishment and potential for academic success in college.
