Erica E. Canfield, a student at Fairview High School, has been selected for membership in the National Society of High School Scholars.

The society honors the top scholars in the nation and invites only those students who have achieved superior academic excellence.

Membership in NSHSS entitles qualified students to enjoy a wide variety of benefits, including scholarship opportunities, academic competitions, free events, member-only resources, publications, participation in programs offered by educational partners, online forums, personalized recognition items and publicity honors.

Nikki Wheeler, daughter of Larry and Marie Wheeler of Ashland, recently received a bachelor’s degree from Morehead State University.

The 2002 graduate of Boyd County High School has been admitted to the professional program in Auburn University’s College of Veterinary Medicine.

Bradlee Jones of Ashland was awarded an A.B. “Happy” Chandler Foundation Scholarship in honor of William B. Sturgill.

He will attend Eastern Kentucky University to study premedicine.

The following local students have been named Senator Jeff Green Scholars.

Students earn this designation by achieving at least a 4.0 grade-point average all four years of high school and scoring at least a 28 composite on the ACT.

As Green scholars, they are eligible for $2,500 a year in Kentucky Educational Excellence Scholarship awards. Students may receive up to $10,000 toward their college expenses if they continue to do well in school.

The title honors the late senator from Mayfield who served in the General Assembly from 1992 to 1997.

Area scholars are:

Kerry Adkins of Ashland and Katie Daniel of Catlettsburg, Fairview High School; Andrew Boyer, Lauren Culver, Lauren Frame, Ian Holbrook, Brett Malloy, Cole Malloy and John “Jake” Webb, all of Ashland, Paul G. Blazer High School; Kala Faulkner of Ashland, Rose Hill Christian School; Tia Maggard of Olive Hill, West Carter High School; Sasha Steele and Kyla Tolliver, both of Greenup, Greenup County High School; John Calhoun and Daniel Clevenger, both of Raceland, and Karisa Grizzle of Ashland, Raceland-Worthington High School; and Hillary Dodd of Ashland, Andrew Heaberlin of Wurtland, Haileigh Ross of Flatwoods and Brandon Fyffe, Jeremy Harbour, Michael Lucas, Rebecca Sicking and David Williams, all of Russell, Russell High School.

The National FFA Organization has awarded a $1,000 Ford Trucks/Built Ford Tough Scholarship to Justin Wheeler of Boyd FFA.

Ford Trucks, as a special project of the National FFA Foundation sponsors the scholarship.

Recipients were selected based on the applicant’s academic record, FFA and other school and community activities, supervised agricultural experience program in agricultural education and future goals.

He plans to use the funds to pursue a degree at Morehead State University.
