James Mike Webster of Catlettsburg, who is planning to study physical therapy at the University of Kentucky and a customer of the Office of Vocational Rehabilitation, was one of 30 Kentuckians awarded the Education Cabinet’s Education at Work Scholarship on July 11.
The $1,000 scholarships are for those students pursuing postsecondary education in Kentucky.
Also receiving the Education at Work Scholarship were Brenda Ann Ball of Louisa, who is studying social work at Morehead State University and is a customer of the Office of Employment and Training; Joelle Johnson of Morehead, who is studying respiratory therapy at Maysville Community and Technical College and is a customer of Kentucky Adult Education; and Erika Maynard of Inez, who is planning to major in premedicine at Eastern Kentucky University and is a customer of the Office of Career and Technical Education.

Leslie Melvin, daughter of Frank and Pam Melvin and a 2005 graduate of Raceland-Worthington High School, has been named to the dean’s list at Kentucky Christian University for the spring semester.
A dean’s list student must earn between 3.75 and 3.99 grade point average and be enrolled in a minimum of 12 semester hours.
Also, Adrienne Clarke of Ashland has been named to the honor roll by earning between a 3.3 and 3.74 GPA and enrolled in at least 12 hours.
She is the wife of Christopher Clarke and the mother of Christine Clarke.

Kristina Nicole Brown, daughter of Greg and Betty Brown of South Shore, graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor of science degree in biochemistry from Marshall University.
She was inducted into the Alpha Epsilon Delta (honorary pre-health care), Alpha Chi Sigma (honorary chemistry), Pre America Medical Student Association and Gamma Beta Phi honor societies. She was secretary for the Marshall University Ambassadors and student body vice president.
She will attend the University of Kentucky Medical School in August.

Several local students were named to the dean’s list for the spring semester at Berea College. To be eligible, a student must achieve a 3.2 or higher regular term average for a minimum of four full courses, the equivalent of 16 credit hours.
Elizabeth Ann Fleming and Jonathan Tyler Fleming are the children of Dawn Fleming of Ashland. Brandon Music is the son of Richard and Connie Music of Ashland. Erin Patricia Johnson is the daughter of Paul and Patricia Johnson of Ashland. Sarah Elizabeth Alcorn is the daughter of Samuel and Peggy Alcorn of Ashland. Katherine Nicole Johnson is the daughter of Paul and Patricia Johnson.

The following area students were named to the president’s list at Shawnee State University by earning a grade point average of 3.5 or better and being full time.

Two area students have been inducted into the University of Kentucky Robinson Scholars Program.
James Tanner Stevens, son of James and Claris Stevens of Louisa, will attend Lawrence County High School this fall.
Zachary Neace, son of Richard Neace of Stephens, will attend Elliott County High School this fall.
The Robinson Scholars Program is a scholarship, student support and leadership development program that serves first-generation college-bound and college students from 29 eastern Kentucky counties who have demonstrated the potential to succeed but who might encounter economic, cultural or institutional impediments to completion of a four-year college degree.
The program identifies scholars in the eighth grade.
The program provides college tuition, room and board and books during college and students must maintain an acceptable grade point average and graduate from high school to receive their scholarship.

MacMilan Jdan Maddox, son of Mike and Jade Maddox of Russell and a graduate of Russell High School, has received scholarships from Pikeville College. He received the Pikeville College and Walker scholarships, in which eligibility is based on 3.5 or higher grade point average and ACT score of 26 or higher.
He also received a scholarship to play men’s soccer at the college. Local scholarships include the VanHoose-Stewart Foundation Big Sandy Superstore, Jim Fannin Memorial, Cameron Weis Memorial Golf, Teresa Wright Jarrell-Century 21 Brooks Wells Enterprises, William James Ledford Memorial and Mabel Shoemaker White/Lila Shoemaker Sanders Memorial.

Margaret Logan of Olive Hill will receive one of four scholarships awarded through the TRIO programs.
She completed an associate of arts degree in May and is working on a bachelor’s degree in social work.
While working toward her educational goals, Logan has been employed full time as an instructor at the Olive Hill Adult Learning Center. In addition, she is a mother of five and a grandmother of one.
The TRIO program at MSU includes Student Support Services, Educational Opportunity Center Northeast and Southeast, Educational Talent Search I and II, Upward Bound I, Upward Bound East and Upward Bound Math and Sciences Center.
