For Tara McKenzie, the world has been a classroom. Her studies have taken the Pikeville College alumna to Africa, England, and later this year to Sydney, Australia.
McKenzie of Webbville has been selected to receive the Kentucky Rotary District 6740 Ambassadorial Scholarship. The $25,000 one-year scholarship will enable her to study social policy at the University of Sydney.
“I am indebted to the Pikeville Rotary Club,” McKenzie said. “It was the kindness of Pikeville’s Rotarians that sent me on my first flight to Minnesota. They provided a financial donation that helped make my 2002 trip to South Africa possible. Now they, and the rest of District 6740, have invested in my graduate studies in Australia. Pikeville Rotary has had a hand in some of my most amazing experiences and I thank the membership for that — a million times over.”
McKenzie said scholars serve as ambassadors of goodwill to the people of the host country and give presentations about their homelands to Rotary clubs and other groups. Upon returning home, scholars share with Rotarians and others the experiences that led to greater understanding of their host countries.
