Leslie Gunstream, daughter of Sue Simons of Austin, Texas and Jesse Gunstream of Slidell, La., was named to the dean’s list for the spring quarter at The Ohio State University.
A student must have a GPA between 3.5 and 4.0 to qualify.
She is a 2003 graduate of Russell High School.

Three local students were involved in the Center for Gifted Studies at Western Kentucky University’s Summer Camp for Academically Talented Middle School Students.
One-hundred sixty-five students were involved in the two-week camp from June 11 through 23.
The camp offered 30 classes from which each student selected four and included acting, art, ceramics, Chinese, crime scene investigation, ecology, geography, health-care careers, law, mural painting, musical performance and writing.
They included Lauren Canty, daughter of Michael Canty, M.D. and Deborah Canty-Smith of Ashland, a student at Holy Family School; Micaha Dean, daughter of Ben and Kim Howard of Russell, student at Russell Middle School; and David Balaklaw, son of Lee and Marla Balaklaw of Louisa, a student at Louisa Middle School.

The following Boyd County students were honored at Eastern Kentucky University in Richmond.
Named to the dean’s list were Samuel Benjamin Burnett, junior elementary education training major; Megan Jenay Fairchild, sophomore English teaching major; Charissa Marie Foster, junior interpreter training major; Tabitha Ranee Foster, freshman aviation major; Kristin Nicole Lehman, junior public relations major; Rocky Ephraim Lucas, senior sociology major; Emily Marie Schlomer, senior forensic science major, Amy Renee Stambaugh, senior communication disorders major, and Joshua Steven Williams, junior biology major, all of Ashland; and Maria Lee Fitzgerald, sophomore journalism major and Brandon Russell Griffith, senior fire & safety engineering technology, both of Catlettsburg.
To be named, a student must earn a 3.5 grade point average with 14 or more credit hours, 3.65 gpa with 13 credit hours, and 3.75 gpa with 12 credit hours.
Stambaugh and Williams were also bestowed the Dean’s Award by achieving dean’s list honors at EKU for three semesters, not necessarily consecutive.
Burnett, Fairchild, Lucas, Schlomer and Stambaugh, and Fitzgerald were also named to the president’s list for those student attaining a perfect 4.0 grade point average for a semester.
Recent graduates of Eastern Kentucky University included the following Ashland students.
Amanda Rene Davis received a bachelor of science degree in occupational science cum laude.
Brandon Thomas Galloway received a bachelor of science degree in criminal justice.
Rocky Ephraim Lucas received a bachelor of arts degree in sociology magna cum laude.
Emily Marie Schlomer received a bachelor of science degree in forensic science cum laude.

Stacy Scott Long, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert S. Long of Catlettsburg, was named to the dean’s list at Georgetown College for the spring semester.

The following students at Kentucky Christian University in Grayson have received the following honors.
Ashley Revely, daughter of William and Martha Revely of Ashland, and a 2005 graduate of Boyd County High School and Laura Aspden, daughter of Mike and Cathy Sparks of Ashland and a 2003 graduate of Paul G. Blazer High School were named to the honor roll.
To be placed on the honor roll, a student must earn a GPA between 3.3 and 3.74.
Named to the president’s list by earning a 4.0 GPA and be enrolled in a minimum of 12 semester hours was Nichole Perkins-Glasser, a 2001 graduate of Fairview High School and daughter of the late Perri S. Collier and James Perkins.
Selected for the dean’s list by earning a GPA of 3.75 and 3.99 was Derek Sloan, son of Diana and Stanley Danner of Flatwoods and Charles David and Charlotte Sloan of Nicholasville.

To be named, a student must be full time and achieve a GPA of 4.0.

Three local students have been named Merit Scholarship winners.
The college-sponsored scholarships given by the National Merit Scholarship Corp. were awarded to the following:
John A. Webb of Ashland and a graduate of Paul G. Blazer High School who received the University of Kentucky Merit Scholarship; Michael P. Combs of Martin and a graduate of Piarist School in Martin, who received the University of Louisville Merit Scholarship and Michael D. Greene of Morehead and a graduate of Lexington Christian Academy, who received the University of Oklahoma Merit Scholarship.

Morehead State University’s College of Education has announced that four high school seniors are among those students receiving Future Educators of America Scholarships.
To be eligible, the candidate must be admitted as an entering freshman and plan to major in education.
The $500 scholarship was given to:
Melanie Bryan, daughter of Alden and Sheryl Bryan of Catlettsburg, a Boyd County High School graduate. She also received the Regents Scholarship by having a minimum ACT composite score of 20. The Regents Scholarship is renewable for up to four years and is valued at $2,500.
Jeffery Ryan Daniel, son of Jeff and Kathy Daniel of Paintsville, a Johnson Central High School graduate.
Tiffany Ann Madden, daughter of Anthony and Angie Madden of Garrison, a Greenup County High School graduate.
Ashley N. Underwood, daughter of Judy Underwood of Greenup and a graduate of Greenup County High School.
Other students receiving scholarships from MSU were:
Keisha La Rae Walker, daughter of Larry and Rena Walker of Olive Hill, a graduate of West Carter High School, received an Alumni Scholarship.
To be eligible, at least one of the student’s parents, grandparents or their spouse must be an active member of the MSU Alumni Association and is valued at $1,000 renewable for up to four years if the recipient maintains the required grade point average.
Ryan Wente, son of Jeffrey and Janet Wente of Grayson, is a graduate of East Carter High School and received the Commonwealth Scholarship.
To be eligible, a student must have superior grades and ACT test scores. Valued at full in-state tuition, the scholarship is renewable for up to four years if the recipient maintains the required grade point average.
Kristen Nicole Fultz, daughter of Ron and Judy Fultz of Ashland and a graduate of Boyd County High School, received the Presidential Scholarship and Diversity Scholarship.
Eligibility is based on outstanding grades and ACT test scores. Valued at full in-state tuition and housing for most recipients, it is renewable for up to four years if the recipient maintains the required grade point average.
The Diversity Scholarship is given to those student with an ethnic background and a legal resident of Kentucky. It is valued at $,1000 per year and is renewable for up to four years.
Courtney Ida-Lee Boodry, daughter of Jerry and Geneva Boodry of Greenup, received the Presidential and Alumni Scholarships.
She is an honors graduate of Greenup County High School.
Margaret Ann Waddle, daughter of Richard and Valerie Waddle of Flatwoods, received the Alumni and Regents Scholarships.
She is a graduate of Russell High School.
The Regents Scholarship is given to those students who have a minimum ACT composite score of 20. Valued at $2,500 per year, the scholarship is renewable for up to four years.

The following students were inducted into Morehead State University chapter of the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi during the annual spring banquet.
They included: Jackie McCleese, Vanceburg graduate student; Mark W. Salyers, Catlettsburg graduate student; Clara G. Nemeth, Ashland graduate student; Michael Heineman, Amanda Traugott and Timothy Jarrell, Ashland seniors; Melissa Hammond, Louisa senior; Melinda Arnett, Rush senior; Trisha Edington, Olive Hill senior; and Ashley Nicole Loperfido, Raceland junior.
To be eligible, initiates must have been enrolled at MSU for at least one year, be of sound character and ranked in the top five percent of the junior class, the top 10 percent of the senior class or a graduate student with an outstanding academic record.

Declan Nishiyama, a junior boarding student at McCallie School in Chattanooga, Tenn., received honors for his classroom performance during the second semester of the 2005-06 school year.
He was named to the Headmaster’s List for earning all A’s in regular courses and no grade lower than a B-plus in honors or Advanced Placement courses.
He is the son of Jerry and Maryann Bentley.
