Honors

Sara Ames Montague, daughter of Phillip and Teresa Montague of Ashland, graduated magna cum laude with a B.A. in psychology from Emory and Henry College in Emory, Va., on May 13.

She completed a Senior Honors Thesis titled “The Identification of Parental Punishment Using a Projective Test.”

While at Emory and Henry, she was a member of Emory and Henry Scholars; secretary of Cardinal Key, the organization for outstanding women on campus; Psi Chi psychology honor society; Pi Gamma Mu social science honor society; Sigma Mu for top 10 percent of the class; president of Campus Christian Fellowship; and a leader of the Drama Ministry.

She received the Bruce C. Carruth Citation for Departmental Service given to students who have provided a service to the department of psychology during their tenure at Emory and Henry.

She will attend Radford University in Radford, Va., in the fall to pursue a master’s degree in clinical psychology.

Morehead State University’s Department of Nursing has announced its graduates for 2006 in the Baccalaureate of Science in Nursing and Associate Degree Nursing degrees.

Å Morehead State University junior is the recipient of a 2006 Kentucky Academy of Science Award.

Channing Richardson of Grayson received the Botany Fund Award for a project titled “A Survey of the Pteridological, Bryological and Lichenological Diversity of Carter Caves State Resort Park.”

The Kentucky Academy of Science Foundation makes money available through the Marcia Athey and Botany funds. The funds are for research planned and conducted by students of Kentucky secondary schools, colleges and universities under the supervision of a faculty member.

Dawn Brislin, daughter of Stephen R. Brislin and Sandra K. Brislin, a 1999 graduate of Boyd County High School, recently graduated with a master of arts in education degree in school counseling at Eastern Kentucky University. She will pursue a doctoral studies degree in counselor education at Penn State University this fall, where she received a Rehabilitation Services Administration traineeship, which will fund her tuition and provide her with a small stipend for living expenses.

She received a bachelor’s degree in social work from the University of Kentucky and has been a social worker at Shriners Hospital in Lexington for the past two years.

In recent years, she has presented at both state and national conferences and has had an article accepted in The Journal of Counseling and Development. She has been recognized as an outstanding student by both Eastern Kentucky University and the Kentucky Counseling Association.

Ashley Jackson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. David Boggs of Ashland, graduated with bachelor of business administration degree in marketing from Freed-Hardeman University in Henderson, Tenn., on May 13.

Beginning this year, graduates of Marshall University’s BS in Safety Technology Program are awarded the Graduate Safety Practitioner designation.

They receive a waiver of the Safety Fundamental’s examination (the first of two examinations leading to the Certified Safety Professional certification) and are recognized as candidates for the CSP certification by the Board of Certified Safety Professionals.

Among recent graduates are Joseph T. “J.T.” White of South Shore.

Brian Murray Gillespie, son of David and Martha Gillespie and grandson of Bill and Mildred Gillespie, all of Ashland, graduated cum laude from Green Mountain College in Poultney, Vt.

The 2000 graduate of Paul G. Blazer High School is a mountain guide with Alaska Mountain Guides of Haines, Alaska.

Members Choice Credit Union recently presented its annual scholarships to area seniors.

They included:

Members Choice also awarded scholarships this year to the children of two credit union employees.

Amy E. Higgins of Ashland graduated cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in psychology at Tusculum College in Greeneville, Tenn.

She graduated with a 3.5 to 3.74 grade point average and was a member of Alpha Chi National Honor Society.

Bradley Steven Clark of Lexington, a graduate of Paul G. Blazer High School, has received a bachelor of arts degree in history from Eastern Kentucky University in Richmond.

He is a son of J. Steven Clark of Ashland and Angelia Nabors of Nashville and a grandson of Jerry and Beverly Clark of Ashland.

He is a four-time dean’s list recipient with an overall GPA of 3.5 and a member of Phi Alpha Theta National Historical Honor Society and Delta Epsilon Iota National Academic Honor Society.

He is married to Jessica Culver Clark.

Rachel Lyon, daughter of Mark and Lynn Lyon and grandaughter of Kerlin and Janieve Lyon of Raceland, has been selected as a participant in Education in Action’s Lone Star Leadership Academy in Austin, Texas, on June 19 through 23.

Selection was based on academic success, demonstrated leadership ability, community/school involvement, cheerleading and a teacher recommendation from the Allen Independent School District.

Education in Action, dedicated to fostering educated and involved Texans, hosts the Lone Star Leadership Academy.

John C. Calhoun and Charles W. Calhoun, sons of Gary and Barb Calhoun of Raceland, have been honored by the U.S. Achievement Academy.

John, a senior at Raceland-Worthington High School, has been named an All-American Scholar in science and business/computer science by earning a 3.3 or higher grade-point average.

He was also named a U.S. National Award winner in football.

Charles, who is finishing his freshman year at RWHS, has been been awarded an U.S. National Leadership and Service Award in science.

They are the grandsons of Faye and R.W. Calhoun of Grayson and Doug V. Soske of Wilmington, Mass.

Jonathan Rakes of Catlettsburg has been awarded a 2006 Foodland Brands for Scholarship by Craycraft Foodland.

The recent graduate of Boyd County High School will attend Centre College in the fall.

Craycraft Foodland, participating food manufacturers and grocery wholesaler SUPERVALU team to award 10 $1,000 scholarships in the West Virginia, Virginia, Kentucky and Ohio Foodland marketing area.

Andrea Jo Sargent, daughter of Ben and Cathy Sargent of Greenup, was pinned at the Ashland Community and Technical College School of Nursing graduation on May 13.

Throughout the program, she worked as a nurse extern at King’s Daughters Medical Center, maintained a 3.5 grade-point average and was an active member of the Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society.

She plans to continue her education at Vanderbilt University and will work in the emergency department at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tenn.

Brooke Friley, daughter of Danny and Dawn Feltrop and a 2004 graduate of Russell High School, has been selected as a member of the 2006 Summer Orientation Staff at the University of Louisville.

She is one of 13 students chosen to be responsible for conducting orientation sessions for incoming freshmen.

She is a resident assistant, Cardinal Host and Honors Program student. She is a member of Kappa Delta sorority.

She is a junior in the liberal studies degree program and has been accepted into the National Society of Collegiate Scholars. She has been active in the Honors Scholar Program, the Resident Student Association, PEACC Program and Honors Student Council and worked as a mentor for first-year on-campus student residents.
