Kelly Wales Napier, daughter of Cody and Karen Wales of Flatwoods, graduated this month from Xavier University with a doctorate degree in clinical psychology (Psy.D.).
She received a master of arts degree in clinical psychology from Xavier in 2003 and a bachelor of arts degree in psychology from Transylvania University in 2001.
The graduate of Raceland-Worthington High School will complete a predoctoral internship in neuropsychology with the Cincinnati Veterans Affairs Medical Center this summer and will begin her postdoctoral internship in neuropsychology with Drake Center in Cincinnati this fall.

Ryan Rose of Flatwoods, a senior at Raceland-Worthington High School, was presented an engraved bronze medallion to signify his selection as a Distinguished Finalist in the 2006 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program, which honors outstanding youth volunteers.
He was honored for serving as a junior fire chief of the local fire department. He was responsible for training junior firefighters and educating children and other community members about fire safety and prevention. Rose, who followed his father into the fire department in 2002, also helps provide first aid to victims of fires and accidents, supplies fresh air packs to adult firefighters and installs smoke detectors in homes.
All middle level and high schools in the United States, along with Girl Scout councils, county 4-H organizations, Red Cross chapters, YMCAs and volunteer centers, were eligible to select a student or member for a local Prudential award last November. Local honorees were then reviewed by state-level judges, who selected two state honorees in each state and the District of Columbia, plus a select number of distinguished finalists based on criteria such as personal initiative, creativity, effort, impact and personal growth.

Crystal Dawn Bradley, daughter of Larry and JoAnn Bradley of Ashland, was recently awarded a master’s degree from the communications disorders program at the University of Kentucky College of Health Sciences.

Three high school seniors had the opportunity to win $500 scholarships sponsored by Kentucky Educational Development Corp.
Students had to be high school seniors, participate in the 2006 KEDC Student Leadership Event and submit essays to compete for the scholarship awards.
Caitlin Mulvaney of Boyd County High School, Heather Bocook of Paul G. Blazer High School and Sarah Hanshaw of Fairview High School will each be awarded a $500 college scholarship from KEDC.

Brandon Griffith, son of Angie Ballengee and Eddie Griffith of Boyd County, was awarded the Kentucky Firefighter Association Scholarship.
He also received a scholarship from the International Association of Firechiefs Association sponsored by W.S. Darley and Co., a maker of firefighter equipment.
He is a senior at Eastern Kentucky University.

Phillip R. Dowdy Jr., son of Phillip R. Dowdy of Greenup and Sue Gilmore Dowdy of Russell, graduated from Barry University School of Graduate Medical Sciences-Podiatric Medicine Surgery in Miami Shores, Fla., on April 29.
He was a member of the spring semester dean’s list.
The 1995 graduate of Russell High School graduated from Coker College in Hartsville, S.C., with a degree in chemistry and majored in business at Marshall University. He will begin a three-year surgical residency at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit in June.

Scott Lewis, son of Alan and Deborah Lewis of Ashland, graduated magna cum laude from the University of Kentucky with a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering.
He was also named the Outstanding Senior Chemical Engineer.
The 2003 graduate of Paul G. Blazer High School will pursue a master’s degree in chemical engineering from UK this fall.

Crystal Clark of Flatwoods received a bachelor of science degree in education with a major in elementary education at the University of the Cumberlands in Williamsburg.
