Twenty sons and daughters of AK Steel employees have been selected to receive the AK Steel Sons and Daughters Scholarships worth a maximum of $16,000 each and funded by the AK Steel Foundation.
Local recipients included:
Jeremiah Haywood, son of William Haywood of South Portsmouth and Linda Haywood of South Shore, will graduate from Greenup County High School, where he is on the honor roll and a member of the academic team.
Linda Haywood works in the finishing department of Ashland Works.
Jonathan Rakes, son of John and Melinda Rakes of Catlettsburg, is graduating from Boyd County High School, where is on the honor roll and received the All-American Scholar Award.
He has been accepted into the Honors Leadership program at Morehead State University.
John Rakes works in the ironmaking department of Ashland Works.
Kyla Tolliver, daughter of Robert and Anita Prater of Greenup, is graduating from Greenup County High School and is a Kentucky Governor’s Scholar.
Robert Prater works in the finishing department of Ashland Works.
Phillip “Cory” Wolfe, son of Phillip and Sherry Wolfe of Grayson, is graduating from East Carter High School where he is a senior class president.
Phillip Wolfe works in the steelmaking department of Ashland Works.

Angie Rucker, daughter of Ray and Shirley Allen of Ashland and mother of Jesse Rucker, has been named to the Ohio University dean’s list for the winter quarter.
She is a senior majoring in psychology.

Kendra Oatis, an Asbury College sophomore, has completed the spring semester in Frankfort working as an aide in the Kentucky General Assembly.
The graduate of Greenup County High School is majoring in journalism. She was one of eight students from Kentucky’s 20 independent colleges chosen for the 2006 Frankfort Semester Internship program sponsored by the Association of Independent Kentucky Colleges and Universities.
She spent the semester as an aide to Rep. Bob Damron, a Nicholasville Democrat and House Majority Caucus chairman.

Boyd County High School graduates and Transylvania University juniors Tyler Roe and Valerie Ellis were honored during TU’s annual awards program.
Roe, son of John and Carol Roe of Ashland, received Holleian Society recognition.
Students are selected by faculty on the basis of academic achievement and must place in the top 10 percent of the class to be considered for the honor.
He is an applied music major.
Ellis, daughter of Anthony and Vicki Ellis of Ashland, is an exercise science major. She was named to “Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges.”
Recognition is given to juniors and seniors based upon academic performance, leadership on campus and services to the campus and local community.

Mark Tye Haeberle, son of Dr. and Mrs. Mark G. Haeberle of Ashland, has earned dean’s list status for the winter term at Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Va., earning a term grade average of at least 3.4 on a 4.0 scale. He is a junior.

Three local students have received a Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Kentucky on May 13.
Michael Wayne Manning and Pratish Hemendra Shah are from Ashland. Erin N. Moore is a daughter of Ronald Moore and Pamela Chaffins of South Shore.

Two Boyd County students received degrees from Lindsey Wilson College on May 13.
Samuel Holbrook of Ashland received a bachelor of arts degree in human services and counseling and Patricia Willis of Ashland received a bachelor of arts degree in human services and counseling.

Micah Spencer, son of John and Carolyn Spencer of Huntington, formerly of Ashland, has been selected for a summer internship by Chevron/Texaco.
He will work during the summer as a production engineer for Chevron/Texaco in Hobbs, N.M.
He is a sophomore at West Virginia University in the petroleum and natural gas engineering program. He is also the recipient of the Appalachian Underground Corrosion Scholarship and the Kentucky Coal Council Scholarship and is a member of the Society of Petroleum Engineers.

Casey Wright, daughter of Ralph Jr. and Paula Wright of Catlettsburg, has been named a U.S. National Leadership and Service Award winner by the U.S. Achievement Academy.
She is a student at Boyd County High School and a granddaughter of Paul and Darlene McKenzie of Morehead and Ralph Sr. and Lena Wright of Ashland.
She will attend The Ohio State University in Columbus this fall.

Brandon Keith Mullis, son of Joey and Karen Mullis of Grayson, has obtained a juris doctorate degree from Chase College of Law at Northern Kentucky University.
He is a 1999 graduate of West Carter High School and recently passed the Florida bar. He is working for The Sembler Co.
He and his wife, Natasha, reside in St. Petersburg, Fla., and plan to return to Grayson in the fall, where he will practice law with hopes of opening an office there in the future.

Kala Faulkner, a senior at Rose Hill Christian School, has received a 2006 Toyota Community Scholarship.
One-hundred high school seniors who excel in community service and academics are chosen.

John C. Calhoun and Charles W. Calhoun, sons of Gary and Barb Calhoun of Raceland, have been honored by the U.S. Achievement Academy.
John, a senior at Raceland-Worthington High School, has been named an All-American Scholar in science and business/computer science by earning a 3.3 or higher grade-point average.
He was also named a U.S. National Award winner in football.
Charles, who is finishing his freshman year at RWHS, has been awarded an U.S. National Leadership and Service Award in science.
They are the grandsons of Faye and R.W. Calhoun of Grayson and Doug V. Soske of Wilmington, Mass.

Andrea Jo Sargent, daughter of Ben and Cathy Sargent of Greenup, was pinned at the Ashland Community and Technical College School of Nursing graduation on May 13.
Throughout the program, she worked as a nurse extern at King’s Daughters Medical Center, maintained a 3.5 grade-point average and was an active member of the Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society.
She plans to continue her education at Vanderbilt University and will work in the emergency department at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tenn.

To be named, a student must achieve at least a 3.5 grade-point average during the term.
David Adams, a junior biology major, is a son of James and Kathleen Adams of Ashland.
Valerie Ellis, is a junior exercise science major and a daughter of Anthony and Vicki Ellis of Ashland.
Tyler Roe, a junior applied music major, is a son of John and Caorl Roe of Ashland.
They are graduates of Boyd County High School.
John Hall, a sophomore, is a son of Charles and Elizabeth Hall of Ashland.
Alyssa McComas, a freshman, is a daughter of Bill and Kathy McComas of Ashland.
Megan Messick, a freshman, is a daughter of Timothy and Paige Messick of Ashland.
Chelsea Salyer, a freshman, is a daughter of Phillip and Tamra Salyer of Ashland.
Emily Spriggs, a sophomore is a daughter of William Spriggs and Cheryl Spriggs, both of Ashland.
They are graduates of Paul G. Blazer High School.
Zachary Kanouse, a junior biology major, is a son of Stephen and Susan Kanouse of Ashland.
Allison Kifer, a sophomore, is a daughter of Michael Kifer of Ashland.
Timothy Meko, a senior, is a son of Joseph and Kathleen Meko of Russell.
They are graduates of Russell High School.
Brent Craft, a senior philosophy major, is a son of Robert and Janeann Craft of Greenup.
He is a graduate of Greenup County High School.
Rebecca Williams, a sophomore biology major, is a daughter of Raymond and Margaret Williams of Worthington.
They are graduates of Raceland-Worthington High School.
