THE INDEPENDENT
Georgetown College has awarded several scholarships.
Rebecca Leigh Sicking, daughter of Terri Burgess Sicking of Russell, has been awarded a Trustee Scholarship and a Christian Leader Scholarship as well as being named an Equine Scholar.
She is a senior at Russell High School.
The Trustee Scholarship is the top academic scholarship awarded at Georgetown and is renewable for four years. Students are chosen based on GPA, ACT scores and depth of involvement and leadership in activities.
Equine Scholars must participate in various equine activities and internships available through the academic partnership with the Kentucky Horse Park.
Christin Naughgle, daughter of David and Cindie Naughgle of Flatwoods, has been awarded a Presidential Scholarship.
She is a senior at Russell High School.
Presidential scholarships are renewable for four years and recipients must maintain academic standards as set forth by the college.
Lauren Brooke Cooper, daughter of Randy and Cindy Cooper of Ashland, has been awarded a Presidential Scholarship.
She is a graduating senior at Paul G. Blazer High School and will major in education.
Local students receive scholarships from Morehead State University
The Clifford R. and Addie R. Rader Memorial Scholarship was awarded to Amy Potter of Grayson.
The daughter of Mary Potter is a sophomore nursing major at MSU and graduated with high honors from East Carter High School. She made the dean’s list in her freshman year.
The scholarship is awarded to baccalaureate nursing students from Kentucky who maintain at least a 3.0 grade-point average while attending MSU.
Amber Porter, daughter of Allen and Loretta Porter of Sandy Hook, has been awarded the Jane E. Caudill Scholarship.
She is a freshman business major at Morehead State University.
The scholarship was named in honor of Jane Elrod Caudill, a past president of People’s Bank in Sandy Hook who started her career there as a cashier in 1941.
To be eligible, the applicant must be a full-time student at MSU, be a resident of Elliott or Rowan counties and maintain a grade-point average of 2.5 as a freshman and 2.75 thereafter.
Nathan Paul Potter and Kimberly Renee Hardeman of Lewis County High School received a Presidential Scholarship.
Potter is the son of Lonnie Potter of South Shore.
Hardeman is a daughter of Keith and Tammy Hardeman of Vanceburg.
Jonathan Maurice Payne, son of Connie Knipp Payne of Flatwoods, is a graduate of Russell High School.
Michael Brandon Ash, son of Rhonda Ash of Olive Hill, is a graduate of East Carter High School.
Presidential Scholarships are given those students with outstanding grades and ACT test scores. It is renewable for up to four years if the recipient maintains the required grade point average and is valued at full in-state tuition and housing for most recipients.
5 ACTC students honored
Five applied process technologies students at Ashland Community and Technical College have been honored with an award by the American Chemical Society, the world’s largest scientific society.
The award winners are Richard Layne of Ashland, Stephen Christian and Aaron Lewis of Catlettsburg, and Adam Bradley and Kenneth Elrod of Franklin Furnace, Ohio.
The ACS Chemical Technology Student Recognition Award Program was established by the ACS Committee on Technician Affairs in 2004 to help highlight the wide range of skills and accomplishments of graduates to potential employers.
Awards are given to outstanding upper-level chemical technology students who demonstrate a high level of performance in the laboratory and the classroom, excellent oral and written communication skills, integrity and reliability.
Perdue graduates summa cum laude from UK
Matthew F. Perdue, son of Michael and Jane Perdue of Catlettsburg, graduated summa cum laude from the University of Kentucky on May 7 with a bachelor of arts degree in history and the classics.
The 2002 graduate of Paul G. Blazer High School has been accepted to the University of Kentucky’s College of Law.
Church graduates magna cum laude from University of Pittsburgh
Christopher M. Church, son of Mike and Mary Kay Church, formerly of Ashland, graduated magna cum laude from the University of Pittsburgh with dual bachelor of science degrees in electrical engineering and mathematics on April 30.
He also received the International Engineering Consortium Everitt Award granted to the electrical and computer engineer senior most likely to succeed in communications.
The 2003 graduate of Paul G. Blazer High School will continue his education at The Ohio State University in the fall on a full graduate research assistantship in electrical engineering.
Robin A. Bush of Ashland recently graduated from the Marshall University Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine.
She will complete an anesthesiology residency at the University of Louisville.
Lauren Culver of Ashland has been accepted into the Honors Scholars Program at Millikin University in Decatur, Ill., and was offered a $40,000 ($10,000 per year) merit scholarship.
To be accepted into the program, a student must have an ACT score of 27 or higher or an SAT score of 1200 or higher and be ranked in the top 10 percent of his or her class.
She is a senior at Paul G. Blazer High School.
Culver must maintain a cumulative grade-point average of 3.4 on a 4.0 scale to remain in the program and may apply for admittance into the James Millikin Scholars Program during her sophomore year.
Local students received degrees from Georgetown College
Receiving a bachelor of arts degree were: Alicia Marie Cornett, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Rick Cornett of Louisa; Halee Suzanne Griggs, daughter of Susan Griggs of Ashland and Mr. and Mrs. Charles Griggs of Catlettsburg; Davonna Faye Hobbs, daughter of Sydonna F. Hobbs of Russell; Amy Janelle McGarey, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. M. Dale McGarey of Ashland; and Ruth Elisabeth Powers, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John R. Powers of Ashland.
Receiving a bachelor of science degree were: Ellen Stacy Bertram, daughter of Treva Hord of Farson, Wyo., and William C. Bertram of Vanceburg; Michael Chase Caudill, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles M. Caudill of Catlettsburg; Meghan Elizabeth Hillman, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Hillman of Olive Hill; Ashley Paige Jones, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Earl D. Jones of Ashland and Tarra Nicole Williams, daughter of Terry and Caren Williams of Russell.
Willis receives Best Buy scholarship
Eleanor Willis, daughter of Marlon and Paula Willis of Catlettsburg, has been named recipient of the Best Buy Children’s Foundation Awards Scholarship.
The foundation awarded more than $2.4 million to graduating high school seniors. Recipients are chosen based on community service and academic achievement and must be entering an accredited U.S. university, college or technical school in the fall immediately following their high school graduation.
Willis was also chosen to receive a one-time $1,000 Target All-Around Scholarship.
Target has contracted with Scholarship America to administer the program to those enrolled in a full-time course of study at an accredited two or four-year college, university or vocational-technical school in the U.S. by fall, 2006 and be enrolled the entire academic year.
Willis, a senior at Boyd County High School, plans to attend Morehead State University, where she received a Presidential Scholarship.
Sarah Stone, daughter of Mark and Teresa Stone of Bellefonte, has been named to the dean’s list at Ohio University, Athens Campus for the winter quarter.
To be named, a student must attain a 3.5 GPA and earn at least 16 hours. She is a senior marketing and business law major.
She was also selected as an Ohio University College of Business Corporate Leader. She was selected as one of 13 to represent the college by arranging for and hosting visits of executives from major corporations to the Athens campus.
The graduate of Russell High School also completed a marketing internship with JM Smucker Corp. in Orrville, Ohio.
Leon Tackett Memorial Scholarship awarded to local students
The Leon Tackett Memorial Scholarship has been awarded to three local high school students.
Tackett was People Helping People’s founder and former president. The board of directors established a yearly scholarship program that gives three area seniors each a one-time gift of $500.
Latisha Nicole Eaton, a senior at Boyd County High School and daughter of Robert and Debra Lunsford of Ashland, plans to attend Ashland Community and Technical College to study applied sciences/radiology.
Amy Elizabeth Hamilton, a senior at Greenup County High School and a daughter of Linda Hamilton of Grayson and the late Evener Hamilton, plans to attend Ashland Community and Technical College to study nursing.
Angela Litz, a senior at West Carter High School, is a daughter of Barbara Jones of Olive Hill and plans to attens Maysville Community and Technical College to study business and accounting.
