Honors - 05/07/06
Derek Keen, son of Randall and Kathy Keen of South Shore, graduated with honors in December from the University of Kentucky with a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering.
He is project engineer with RADCO Inc., a materials testing laboratory and quality control inspection agency in Long Beach, Calif., and is a 2000 graduate of Greenup County High School.

Two local students have been selected for membership in the Delta Epsilon Iota Academic Honor Society at the University of Kentucky.
Phillip Alexander Montague, son of Phillip G. and Teresa P. Montague of Ashland, is majoring in chemical engineering and plans to pursue a career in medicine.
He is a graduate of Paul G. Blazer High School.
Carrie Leigh Shaffer, daughter of Arthur and Jerri Lynn Shaffer of Grayson, is majoring in biotechnology and is a 2003 graduate of East Carter High School.
Students qualify on the basis of academic achievement. Members must have completed a minimum of 30 semester hours at an accredited college or university, while maintaining a 3.30 cumulative grade-point average or a scholastic ranking within the top 15 percent of their class.
Shaffer was also presented the UK Oswald Research and Creativity Award, which recognizes individuals who do outstanding work in the field of research. Her research abstract will be published in the UK magazine Kaleidoscope. She plans to obtain a Ph.D. with a focus on infectious disease research and will be working as an honors intern this summer for the FBI in Quantico, Va.

Two local students have been awarded Trustee Scholarships at Georgetown College.
Andrew Craig, son of Dr. Paul Craig II and Dr. Ann Craig, both of Ashland, has also been named an Equine Scholar.
He is a senior at Paul G. Blazer High School and will major in music.
Kyla Michelle Tolliver, daughter of Anita and Robert Prater, is a senior at Greenup County High School.
The scholarship is the top academic scholarship awarded at Georgetown College and is renewable for four years.
Students receiving the scholarship were chosen based on GPA, ACT scores and depth of involvement and leadership in activities.

Jana Haberek of Boyd County has been named to the Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges directory.
She is a junior at Lindsey Wilson College in Columbia.
Selection is based on academic achievement, service to the community, leadership in extracurricular activities and potential for future success.

Jeremy C. Grubb, son of Charles and Sherry Grubb of South Shore, has been named an All-American Scholar by the U.S. Achievement Academy.
To be recognized for this honor, a student must earn a 3.3 or higher grade point average.
He is a student at Greenup County High School and is the grandson of Jack and Dolores Grubb of South Shore and the late Jerry and Louise Ramey, formerly of Huntington.

The following Paul G. Blazer High School students were winners in the Kentucky PTA Reflections Contest.
Lauren Smith won an Award of Excellence in Senior Dance. Andrew Boyer won an Award of Excellence in Senior Literature. Brett Malloy won an Award of Merit in Senior Literature.

Paul G. Blazer High School’s Mock Trial Team won the regional championship, defeating Boyd and Greenup county high schools.
Team members are Hunter Davis, Maddie Keyser, Hannah Sloan, Jeb Jarrell, Robert Renfroe, Kayla McCann, Casey Muncy, Jacob Hogg, Alex Tatman and Spencer Greene. Mitch Hall and Kim McCann are the attorney-coaches and faculty sponsors are Mr. Carroll and Mr. Templeton.
Two Blazer students were honored as All Tournament in the Mock Trial state competition.
Hunter Davis was named best witness and Kayla McCann was named best attorney.

Suzanne Blunk, Clay McKnight and Ryan Rigsby, students at Paul G. Blazer High School, were selected to attend the 2006 Governor’s School for the Arts at Transylvania University.

Paul G. Blazer High School winners in the Regional Technology Student Competition were Zach McMeekin and Ian Crawford, 1st, problem solving; Justin Sloan, 3rd, dragster design; and Trace Stafford, Justin Robbins and Kevin Adams, 3rd, technology bowl.

Members of Paul G. Blazer High School’s Speech Team captured third place at the John Marshall Tournament.
They are Caitlin Moore, Emily Green, Jennifer Vice, Lindsay Mansfield and Kayla McCann.

Blazer High School’s Regional FBLA winners were Kari Barnett, 1st, parliamentary procedure; Maddie Keyser, 1st, business math; Ross Buskey, 2nd, business; Kathryn McGuire, 3rd, banking; Victoria Grimm, 3rd, economics; Zach McMeekin, 3rd, marketing; and Jill Bradford, Zach Hammond and Spencer Greene, 3rd, entrepreneurship team.
Kari Barnett was elected Region 5 president and Maggie Lowe won the Eugene H. Smith Award.

Justin Wheeler, son of Frank Kees and Marvette Kees of Ashland, a senior at Boyd County High School, has been awarded a $1,000 scholarship by Boyd County Ford Inc. and Ford Motor Co.
He plans to study farm management at Morehead State University.
The scholarship is one of 540 scholarships awarded by Ford Division, Ford Motor Co. Fund and Ford Dealers to FFA members who are high school seniors planning to attend college in the fall.
