The governing body of the Governor’s Cup competition has banned Russell’s academic coach and most of the academic team’s scores in the regional competition won’t be counted.
Matt Knupp is banned from attending future events of the Kentucky Association of Academic Competition as coach, official or spectator, according to a ruling by KAAC executive director John Bennett.
The written assessment scores of academic team members won’t be counted in Region 16 results, although scores in quick recall, composition and future problem solving will be counted.
The KAAC board found that Knupp violated competition rules by wrongfully invoking a provision of the rules that allows postponement for weather-related reasons.
The team will be allowed to compete at the state level for “personal achievement only.” That means their scores won’t count, Bennett said.
Russell High School was placed on probation through March 2011. Any further violations would cost it its membership in KAAC.
